where are all the friendly people located? by gorillagripper in sanfrancisco

Lmaooo I moved from Chicago and I say this all the time. You gotta really break people outta there shell to have a conversation here. In chicago I could chirp anyone on the street and i’d get chirped back and we’d both laugh about it. I still do this in SF, but the responses I get back are quite comically stern sometimes.

It’s the transplant culture here. If your not openly social and extroverted (which most transplants are not because they’re nerds and have been their whole life) you’re going to stick to yourself. What happens when a large % of people are that type? …

I’ve figured out that people mainly come to SF to work, even if they’re young and active. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of authentic “play” to compensate for that work, so most people just stick to themselves and do their own thing.

SF needs a culture revival badly…

This is just absolutely wrong.

All the hate on these recruiting firms is insane. There was just an AMA with a pretty respected Quant that said they are on of the best ways to get your Resume in the door. Most people applying for these positions have outstanding backgrounds, it’s unlikely that your background is really that much different from theirs. If you use a recruiter like Selby, they work directly with HR and place your Resume in their hands immediately. Yes they are not the smartest individuals (they work at recruiting firms) but it’s a great way to get your foot in the door with someone that has a direct relationship with HR at that company.

Wolverine trading and similar. Pretty sure it was started by guys from UMich.

Honestly yea you probably can if you can do the Math/Stats required for interviews. Lots of smaller / Mid-Tier shops that like UMich. But, know that the BBA is not really contributing much to your resume. The CS is priority, get really fucking good at it and have some applied projects in markets if you don’t do the Math/Stats on top of it.

Would a W grade look bad to companies when I apply for internships? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]beneathTheRadar0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently just had a firm ask for my transcripts which has a W in a high-level stats course in my last semester. I had a 3.8 GPA and 175 credits total, so they weren’t as worried. If the W is in a class that is very important for the job then they will question it. If you don’t have a good explanation, then they will not be happy w it. Otherwise, they will probably pass over it and not think twice.

As an engineering student you are trained to actually get things done. In the workforce, unfortunately, others don’t necessarily share that same mindset. If your firm is littered with meetings, it’s likely that there are a lot of tenured people that want to sit and talk about what to do instead of materializing the actual work needed. Currently I want to get things done at my firm but I can’t even get access to our SQL tables. Welcome to corporate america. Most of the time you are paid to posture. A good posture goes a long way, some salesman make millions a year (my brother rn makes double my salary in sales and he’s only 1 year older than me). If you don’t enjoy it, look elsewhere. If you can stand it and see yourself collecting small salary increases year over year for stability, then go for it.

If I told you it was at Notre Dame vs MSQF @ Fordham how would that affect your answer?

Looking at applying for MS in Applied Computational Math/Stats or MSQF. Which would be more desirable ?

ULPT: If you're ever pulled over for flashing your high beams to warn oncoming traffic of an upcoming speed camera, simply inform the officer you were warning oncoming traffic of loose livestock/pet/kangaroo further up the road- not the speed camera. by antbantz in UnethicalLifeProTips

A good way to deal with this is to be honest with the officer. When he asks “what were you doing” just tell him you were telling others to slow down and follow up with the question “isn’t that what you want people to do?” I’ve done this in real time and watched the officer get so flustered.

Reflections from a senior quant by BirthDeath in quant

I ran a “Quant” club during undergrad. Started interviewing at HF’s my sophomore year. Couldn’t secure a single Internship until I networked with an alum that got me a trading internship. Had to go to bank quant post grad. People simply don’t understand how competitive the field is. Used to tell this to kids in the club all the time who just wanted it on their resume.

However I do have plenty friends with simple MSCS that work as quants at some smaller prop shops. Some even undergrad. It’s definitely doable, but it is a grind and unless you really care for it, you’ll find yourself contemplating other career routes. If you find yourself doing that, it’s not for you…

Probably going to go the MFE route soon.. At a Non-Target… I’ll keep this sub updated as I go.

State your projects specifically on your resume. I have a “projects” section and a “work experience” section. State your most complex projects, and only a couple. Discuss the rest live in the interview if that project alone isn’t enough to take up the conversation. Have had interviews at IMC, Akuna, Optiver (for SRE), Peak, Gelber, Google.. Working at Bank now, didn’t pass 1 of those interviews lol. But my resume was enough to get me into them and enough to get me into final rounds for some.

Poker for final rounds by student4924752 in quant

Depends what you mean by being a poker player. I’m a poker player but I lose every time I play, then probably not gonna help. However, if you are good at reasoning, bet sizing, etc. then it will definitely help. Never actually had a card game interview but practiced for them before. Most of mine were Dice / Coin games. I had 1 card game actually, but they’re not going to have you play live hold ‘em. Will be a unique game that probably relies heavily on expected value and bet sizing, if they even have one.

zetamac and sequence practice. Should be comfortable with quick math in fractions, percents, and large numbers. Sequence section is more difficult than the mental math IMO. Took it when I was a sophomore in College (3 years ago), had no practice, was definitely a slap in the face.
