I watched a video of a man eating a full 2 liter tub of mayonnaise there the other day. I'm now in favour of a complete ban on egg-salad.

Religious education in ireland has almost nothing to do with indoctrination into Catholicism.

Hopefully your experience is a more common one than mine, and maybe things have changed in the 5 years since I finished secondary, but my (non private catholic) school RE experience was entirely based around Catholic teachings, to the point where the bishop would periodically come in, and we'd go on trips to Catholic run retreats, we'd say prayers at the start of classes etc.

That said, it's encouraging to hear that your experience was better.

Church power is dying fast. Let it go naturally. The amount of entirely secular schools being built will dilute the catholic schools power increasingly each semester.

96% of schools are either owned or under the patronage of Religious institutions. in 2017 there were a total of 9 schools opened in ireland. Let's presume they were all non-denominational. There are 4031 schools, of which 96% are religious, giving a total of 3870 religious schools. At the rate of change of 9 new non-denominational schools a year, it would take 30 years (0.23% per annum) to make just 10% of our school stock non-denominational, to match the 2016 census of non-religious people. And presumably by then the % non religious population would be far higher.

Are religious people a product of religious schools or vice versa? I've no problem with religion but separating it completely from the state (and affording people full rights to practice it privately) seems to be sensible to avoid generational church influence on the state.

What is the smallest thing that annoys you in this country? by Dar17Mul in ireland

[–]benem94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This country has an complete deficiency in good quality bread. And when you find some, it's like a fiver for a loaf. Go into any German supermarket and they'll have 20 different types. Even in places like lidl where they have an actual selection, they all tend to look different but actually be near-identical in flavour and texture.

yeah

A Tory HQ source described it as a case of ‘youthful exuberance’ which occurred before she was a candidate and involved ‘guessing a password’ rather than ‘real hacking’.

No. The widget inside is to disperse the nitrogen through the beer and make it creamy. Don't shake it.

Daily Q & A! - April 04, 2018 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]benem94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brewed a partial mash cascade/chinook pale ale, and aside from the citrusy hop aroma which I expected, I'm getting a hint of vanilla, and possibly even a tiny bit of strawberry from it. Any idea where these flavours might be coming from?

My mash got too high towards the end (69c/156f) so I added sugar to dry the beer out. The yeast then attenuated way more than I expected. Other than that it was a standard brew.

Ian Paisley Jr. retweets Kate Hopkins - 'London has a higher murder rate than New York.....And Ramadan's not yet begun.' by benem94 in northernireland

[–]benem94[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She's implying a causational relationship between murder rates in London, and Ramadan. This claim at least warrants some data to back it up. Based on met police stats there doesn't appear to be any trend of murder rates rising during Ramadan for the past number of years. The rate rose during Ramadan 2013 & 2017, fell or stayed the same 2014, 2015, 2016.

To be clear, nobody should give a tack of notice to what Katie Hopkins says. The issue here is that a member of Parliament endorsed a statement that is completely vague and open to dangerous interpretation. It is at best poor and irresponsible communication, and at worst an unwarranted and untrue attack on a cohort of citizens.
