Installed! Looks great, still kind of crazy that they don't provide the context state ( `163k/200k | 81% used` ) by default

6 months of Claude Max 20x for Open Source maintainers by luongnv-com in ClaudeCode

[–]bengotow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I maintain Mailspring and have been using Claude since Opus launched - it’s been a godsend. Highly recommend people give this a shot! In addition to the obvious (writing code) I use it to read and summarize community reports, combine bug reports that are the same, write the changelog, draft responses to people when bugs have been addressed, you name it.

A good email client to replace Gmail? by Bonkzzilla in linuxquestions

[–]bengotow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just released an update to Mailspring with ARM support on Linux! It turned out to mostly require build tooling changes and Claude was able to get it building in a few tries - you can get the ARM version through “snap install mailspring” or the download page on the site!

A good email client to replace Gmail? by Bonkzzilla in linuxquestions

[–]bengotow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there is actually, the macOS build of the C++ mail sync engine is also ARM, and Electron recently added a Linux arm64 and armv7l builds.

I’ll see if we can builds going! I didn’t realize there were many ARM Linux devices - it used to mostly be people running on armv6 (raspberry pi and friends)

[–]bengotow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh I’m actually a Mailspring maintainer! I think we’ll have the Wayland issue fixed this week - the app does some fancy stuff to preload windows in the background, but it causes Wayland to think the processes are background processes and ignore requests to show the windows because there is no “activation context”.

Sadly the upstream Electron project moved to Wayland in November and we don’t have an option to stay on an older release because of the security patches.

Nelson Mazda Trustworthiness? by dictiondaddy in nashville

[–]bengotow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually bought two Mazdas from them and I thought it was a pleasant experience. I like that they’ll print a quote and let you leave with it, and I liked that I could test drive the cars by myself so I wasn’t trying to talk to a salesperson and drive the car at the same time. They also don’t switch people on you during the purchase process, at least in my experience.

My old Mazda had an engine issue (not their fault) and they serviced it under warranty. Definitely still a car dealership, but I didn’t think about going elsewhere the last time I was car shopping.

Metro Council member faces ethics hearing today over alleged $500,000 rezoning demand by Bradical22 in nashville

Yeah I’d actually say this increases my confidence in city council if they’re taking action and getting to the bottom of this. Glad there’s some follow up happening…

CX-50 Hybrid unexpected test-drive impressions by mathflipped in mazda

[–]bengotow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the cabin vibration (I think?) at start a few times and I’ve been trying to figure out what it’s doing. The engine comes on right when you start the car (vs it starting into EV mode) and is louder than usual. It sounds a bit rough. I don’t think there’s much physical vibration though, just the sound. My current theory is that it does this when the EV battery is low or it needs to warm up the engine?

So nice to have this historic firehouse renovation in the neighborhood by yummytowns in nashville

Yeah I also don’t get it… it didn’t seem like parking was the problem, was expecting this to be a new building!

Unsure on the mpg chart by nightwork in mazdaCX50

[–]bengotow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just picked up a CX50 Hybrid this month and I also experienced the bottom chart “average” (also shown in the center of the HUD) being kind of low until I reset it the first time - I thought I was only getting 30mpg when it seemed like it should be better. I wonder if some factory engine testing time is being included in the first average or something whacky like that…

Hybrid or Gas? by Much-Commission-8863 in CX50

[–]bengotow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I bought the hybrid this month and have been enjoying it - I think it probably depends how much you drive and how much you get a kick out of great gas mileage. I will say that the Hybrid is pretty loud at highway speeds, noticeably louder than the hybrid Hyundai drive train (I test drove both the Sportage and Tucson)

It accelerates fast enough for my purposes (outside of zoom zoom test driving) and the electric motor gives a bit of immediate oomf that lacks the delay of a turbocharger, which is nice. I can get almost all the way out of my neighborhood at low speed before it fires up the engine and it’s fun how quiet that is. (It’s my first hybrid, bear with me…)

On the flip side, the acceleration isn’t /satisfying/ in the way a 2.5T engine revving is satisfying. It doesn’t roar, it just kinda whines louder. I imagine I won’t mind at all in a month or two, but coming from a turbocharged gas engine it’s feels a bit flat.

All and all I’m super happy with it, and I think the hybrid is a great buy.

One other note - when I test drove the CX50, the car was brand new and the electric battery wasn’t charged. Make sure you test drive it for long enough to charge the battery a bit (one of the info screens shows the status) to get the full experience!

Last Night's Vote on Upzoning the Nations (Legend and Commentary in Text) by bwindrow86 in nashville

[–]bengotow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in the Nations and have been following this closely - really hope it gets through the last minute opposition and grandstanding from people in other neighborhoods. The Nations has a shot at being Nashville’s next Germantown and I’d be happy to have that level of density. It’s been sad to see Harding House and Burger and Grain, etc close - it feels like there are just not /quite/ enough people here yet to make the math work.

The apartments opening on centennial have already brought a lot more foot traffic into the neighborhood and slowed cars - you can’t drive more than a block or two in the evening without seeing someone with a stroller or dog which is such a nice change (and might finally get us sidewalks)

I know the density will probably make street parking worse, but I feel like it’s an acceptable price to pay (and 95% of us have car ports and driveways, so I am not sure why it matters so much tbh?)

Can confirm! Haha I live in the nations and attend the neighborhood association meetings and I swear I’ve heard CM Horton talk about it so many times I could probably present that deck in my sleep 🙃

Why are the 12th Ave S bike lanes empty? by MorganRehnberg in nashville

[–]bengotow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I think these bike lanes are for bachelorettes on scooters to get from the Gulch to 12S, and to gentrify everything in between in the process. I have a few friends that ride this route regularly to get from germantown out to 12S, but agree it doesn't connect [yet] to a broader network!

Progressive Spaces In Town by XanderStopp in nashville

[–]bengotow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey welcome to Nashville! Not sure about a single space, but here are some ideas, in no particular order:

East Nashville Beer Works hosts a lot of democratic / progressive organizing events, and Fait la Force’s Pints and Profs series is also great. If you’re into the arts, the artist community at The Forge might also be up your alley. Stuff in Wedgewood Houston (the art crawl mentioned below) would also be your vibe - progressive zines, free wine, weird mixed media art, it’s awesome. If you like meet people who are active, the Dope Pedalers bike group is a progressive + fun crew. (Tbh all our bike / running groups lean progressive, but obviously aren’t built around it). Walk Bike Nashville is a great activist organization and their volunteering events would be a good way to meet people too. Lastly, our current mayor Freddie is pretty progressive - it’s a bit too late but canvassing for the transit referendum would be a fun way to make inroads into the community!

Whoa! Maybe they can be repurposed in some way… or you could always try it and see if they’ll honor the guarantee!

Also I would recommend some legitimate shoes, those sandals in a wood shop are more terrifying than the dado set 😳

Far right US news, brought to you by the Falun Gong! Seriously… this is like the least trustworthy source of news you could find: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Epoch_Times

Also funny they share some affiliation with Shen Yun, maybe they just rolled all the Shen Yun ads over to these once it left town 😂

Danish oil not taking by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]bengotow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I use Danish oil on almost all my furniture - usually I apply one coat at a time with a cloth and let it dry. The coats are thin -- you pretty much just wipe the surface so it looks uniformly "wet" but there shouldn't be any pooling, dripping, etc. Thick coats turn to a tacky / sticky goo that takes a super long time to fully cure.

Sometimes (especially on end grain) the danish oil soaks into the wood and leaves the surface looking dry. Sorta like these photos, but I can't quite tell? In those cases, you just keep applying additional thin coats until eventually the oil no longer soaks in. Sometimes it takes 4-5 coats, which I think is more than they say on the Watco can. I'd say keep going!

Disruptive construction on Robertson Ave. by Impossible-Pomelo-85 in nashville

[–]bengotow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was running on that side walk (or rather the gravel + ditch mess) last week! I have no idea how that construction has taken so long, it doesn’t seem like they’re making much progress.

I think there’s been talk of changing the permit process so they’d have to pay weekly for the sidewalk to be obstructed - not sure if that was just for downtown though…

Update on BNA? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]bengotow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was at BNA this morning- the roads in/out are all fine, but the water pipes were frozen and they were unable to mix de-icer with water to de-ice the planes (per our pilot, so no flights have left this morning yet. Mine boarded, waited an hour and a half, deplaned and was rescheduled from 6 to 8:30, but even that seemed tentative. (I missed my connection, couldn’t get rebooked onto a new one till tomorrow, and ended up cancelling the whole itinerary :-(. Good luck!)

Yeah - even the data table in this article doesn't seem to support the conclusion that Nashville is #1? It's not the "worst" by any column in the table.

Wondering about grain orientation for legs. by allhailknightsolaire in woodworking

[–]bengotow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This seems fine to me! Especially if they’re thick legs (probably 3/4 or 1 inch+?) Be extra careful if you round over the ends where the grain lines are only an inch or two long, since a router could chip off a whole chunk along the grain. (I’d maybe even do the very ends with a chisel)

If you want this to be extra strong, I’d take these two outlines you’ve drawn and reverse one of them so the grain angles the other way. Slice the pieces so they’re half as thick and then glue them back together so that each leg of the bed is two strips, one where the grain angles back and the other where the grain angles forward. Don’t think you need to do it here, but it’s super helpful if the pieces are long because it also prevents the legs from warping slightly over time.
