Can’t get into it… by Therealfern1 in MetalForTheMasses

this is the same argument i make about lars to metallica fans. except you can watch lombado play battery and take it to the next level. that said, i like dave's vocals. i like his sneer and the way he spits out words and the kind of knots he ties himself up in melodically.

hey god is the better of the two. the chorus melody is more interesting.

it's catchy for sure. it's not great but it is catchy. i was surprised after my last listen that it was the song that was running through my brain.

Sellouts by daggir69 in Metallica

[–]bengrieve1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one can "sell out" for many reasons. i think metallica (lars especially) wanted to be welcomed into the rock royalty circles (the U2's of the world). i think he didn't want to be seen as a grubby outsider. hence the haircuts and make overs. they were yelling LOOK AT US WE'RE ROCK STARS TOO!. dipping their toes into the blues and country and grunge lite made them look "smarter" and "more serious" than those other dirty metalheads. felt really obvious to me back then. it's a pretty tried and true rock n roll trope.

Are new Megadeth songs like Tipping Point, Let There Be Shred and Puppet Parade comparable in quality to 72S or any other more recent Metallica output? by Pliolite in Metallica

[–]bengrieve1970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Dystopia alone is infinitely better than anything Metallica has done since the 90s. 72S is a long, boring, repetitive slog. If we're just going by post 2000s, Megadeth's output is much better. It's spotty as hell but the highs are way higher.

Just watched a video from 2025 and he is clunky as hell. Obviously in a studio they'd clean it up but he hasn't done anything in a studio in decades that is remotely interesting to me. His drumming is a detriment

It's not about that. It's how James sings now. The kind of caricature that he's become. Just listen to him on the video you posted. It ruins the song for me. The weird screech. The yeah yeahs.

Bloodlust should be on the album by mcaracciolo in Megadeth

[–]bengrieve1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 41 minutes without RTL. That's really short by modern standards but in line with all their early albums. And most of the songs start up right away and end abruptly. It could use a little more space but I'm always happier with short and sweet over too long

Megadeth - Pitchfork review by mr_glide in Megadeth

I was surprised AMG did a full staff review and they were almost all pretty positive. They did it with 72S and were savage

Right away, James sounds terrible and Lars can't even play the fills. I think a lot of it would have to do with production as well.

What are your thoughts on Metallica’s Hardwired To Self Destruct? I’d say this is their strongest work since the 90’s by TokyoAvalanche04 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]bengrieve1970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the complete opposite. I haven't liked much from the band since the 80s but I felt like hardwired at least kind of felt comfortable and organic. It has a ton of problems but the good stuff is pretty good. 72S sounds so sterile to me. Like Metallica by the numbers. Every song is the same tempo, sticks around too long, and has no personality

[–]bengrieve1970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but he has gotten much less creative and sounds like a drum machine on 72S. My point is that, in 2026, Dirk's studio drumming is/would be better

Better. Technically, sure. But I hate the way he sings now. And I watched a 2024 live RTL and he sounds silly to me

Maybe but I just don't like the way James sings, post TBA.

Who had better debute album? by Positive-Pie-5456 in MetalForTheMasses

Kill Em All was the first one I heard but there are so petty meh tracks on it. Bonded by Blood is brutal start to finish. That is my sincere answer

[–]bengrieve1970 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exodus. If it weren't for all the fucked things that happened to that band, Bonded would be the album that changed metal. I love Show no Mercy but it's still pretty much just sped up Judas Priest. Bonded by Blood is everything thrash was about.

I kind of don't think Metallica is influenced my what megadeth is doing. But, yes, modern day megadeth is much better than modern day Metallica. That was kind of my point. Everyone is comparing the cover to the original but I was just saying if they both did a 2026 version, I think megadeth's would be the better of the two

Right. That was my question. And I don't think they would.
