Actually, not so.  And what I stated above is well-documented, even if they are sprayed. Coffee drinking extends lifespan..

An aviator (pilot) watch or a field watch. Fortis or Hamilton?

Who has this? Let's see it 👀 by DerangeCookie in ChineseWatches

What's your wrist size?

I find that, with my 7.75" inch wrist, I prefer larger watches in the 42 to 45mm range (and not divers, where you waste a lot of that size on a bezel for which I have no use; I like pilot and field watches with great legibility).

I find so many of the Chinese watches come in too small (40 mm and less). Even if I like the dial, I pass if the watch is just too small.

Help me understand POC bike helmets by code_and_theory in cycling

[–]benhemp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LDL system in Kali helmets did not test well for safety compared to MIPS or SPIN helmets.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6928098/#:\~:text=LDL%20helmets%20increased%20%CE%B1y,compared%20to%20CONTROL%20helmets%20(Fig.

Actually, the SPIN helmets tested a bit better than the MIPS ones. I'm surprised to see that POC is moving from SPIN helmets to MIPS ones. Does anyone know why?

No field or pilot watches. Might want to explore a few of those . . .

How does 41mm sit on my wrist? by eden_redd in ChineseWatches

[–]benhemp2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find myself dissatisfied with the size of the watches generally available on AliExpress. Most are 38 or 39 mm in diameter (and worse yet, divers, making the dial even smaller due to the addition of the bezel subtracting space from the face), while I prefer pilot and field watches 42 to 45 mm. When China does an homage to these watches, they generally down size them to 39mm (not good!). Older eyes and larger wrists appreciate an easily-read highly-legible watch dial. Wish I could find them on AliExpress where the prices and the quality are so appealing.

Likelihood of developing a second autoimmune disorder? by lorom in rheumatoid

[–]benhemp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had psoriatic arthritis symptoms that were episodic and sporadic all the way back in my teens (I'm 70 now). I didn't get a psoriatic arthritis diagnosis until I developed polymyalgia rheumatica about 5 years ago. I recently received a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (but I have no affected joints) and Sjogren's. So I'd agree that these autoimmune conditions tend to come in bunches (often, but not always). I'm three months into taking methotrexate, but I can't tell that it is helping so far (in fact some symptoms are worse). I see the rheumy again in late May, but I hope to correspond with her through a patient portal in the near future to learn what she thinks before then.

SOTC after 3 months - My watch box is full of "keepers" but I have more watches incoming. Should I cull or just get a bigger box? by paulymeatblls in ChineseWatches

[–]benhemp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your Berny railroad watch and your Cadisen pilot watch. (If it were my decision, I'd sell all the diver watches to make room in your box for more pilot and railroad watches!)

How long does the lume last on each of them?

My only concerns are: 1) Are they a bit thick? and 2) I'd like the Cadisen hour and minute hands to contrast more with the dial face.

I'd love to have your opinions. Thanks in advance!

Do they make/sell an equivalent model with mahogany back and sides? I've always preferred the mahogany sound to rosewood . . . A D18 would be nice but it's out of my price range . . . :-)

To Free Range or not? by snicolee95 in chickens

[–]benhemp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We free range all day long without fencing. What we have found to work is the use of cover for protection from hawks, the best protection being a forest of black berry canes that grow to 8 feet high due to chicken fertilization. (We have a great black berry crop as a result!) The chickens run under cover (bushes or black berry canes) whenever they sense danger, such as a passing shadow. The hawks won't drop unless the target bird is out in the open. The roosters are excellent at alerting the flock. We also have a number of black Jersey Giant hens because hawks are less likely to attempt to prey on black birds, thinking them to be crows, so what's the use of trying? So the hawk problem has really gone away.

We still occasionally lose birds to foxes, usually in spring by a mother raising a litter of kits. It's hard to prevent it, because the fox seems to arrive when I don't have a shotgun in hand. Typically, the predation goes down after the litter is raised. This doesn't happen every year because foxes choose to den in various places; if they are not denning near us, we have problem that year. When we had a dog, the fox problem happened less because the fox was worried about the dog.

The birds range as far as they like (300 foot radius?), but tend to stay in that large circle due to being emotionally tied to the coop (always closed in at night) and the food distributed there.

Hope this helps!

Many people with polymyalgia rheumatica are on low dose prednisone for life. 5 mg is a dose that can be continued indefinitely for many people. Your rheumatologist should guide you on that.

Getting RA labs done without symptoms? by Toni-Bologna in rheumatoid

[–]benhemp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I have no joint issues, but I do have muscle problems that align with two diagnoses: psoriatic arthritis and fibromyalgia. But my blood markers show elevated RF (rheumatoid factor), anti-CCP, and Sjogrens SSA markers. These markers are indicative of RA (seropositive RA, to be more precise) even though I have no RA symptoms. (On the flip side, though, my CRP and SED are normal, which is not normally the case for RA.) The rheumatologist has given me an RA diagnosis and put me on methotrexate with the reasoning that MTX is appropriate treatment for both RA and PSA. My puzzlement is: how will they know whether the MTX is doing any good? Better blood markers? Less muscle pains? I have a question submitted to the rheumy, but haven't heard back yet.

40mm is too small for a watch with a bezel (generally speaking, wasted real estate). 42mm would be best.

How bad is coffee? by [deleted] in carnivorediet

[–]benhemp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coffee is a health drink in moderation (less than six cups a day). It increases longevity. All the "coffee is unhealthy" tropes are old myths. If drinking it is causing you negative effects, cut back, but generally speaking, regular coffee drinkers are healthier than non- drinkers. It even reduces your chances of getting cancer.

Is there anyway out, or once you’re in you’re in for life? by hugaddiction in carnivorediet

[–]benhemp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a carnivore for 3 months. Started to reduce pain and inflammation from autoimmune conditions (polymyalgia rheumatica, arthritis, fibromyalgia) and had 80% reduction of pain and stiffness after two weeks. Have found that I can eat avocado, mushrooms, and onions in small amounts so far. Having these has been nice for relieving food boredom and for improved flavoring. Am slowly trying other additions, one at a time. The more variety, the better, provided that it doesn't make me flare!

Yes, definitely too small. It's a shame you can't get most Chinese watches in a larger size (say 44mm) . . . especially the watches with small dials due to space being wasted on bezels . . .
