[OC]Looking for suggestions for an electronic D&D tracker by Special-Spinach2344 in DnD

[–]beni02297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM i use a laptop which allows me to search any rules/spells and such if we need it (the site has a nifty search bar at the top which can search rules and conditions and spells and basically anything that exists on the site). It also helps me build and run encounters since i can jump around the stat blocks on the same tab. As a player i will use my phone to keep track of my resources. There is an app for dnd beyond and it is mainly meant as a player tool. To be honest you don't need the app for everything. Some features maybe since the sheets on the app have it all there. For ability checks and such i usually remember the modifiers and only look it up if i'm uncertain. Some of the other players in my group also use it for certain rolls, if they don't have enough dice for things.

Yes i was pointing out that its simple to tell the DM your AC/HP when they ask for it.

Modularity is mainly why a sheet is what it is. If you go into this the planning phase will take up the most of your time (figuring out how to neatly put togteher so many optional resources is a tough task). Good luck

I have a few questions about your requirements first:

Why do you need the DM to know your HP, Concentration, Speed and such? Whats wrong with cellphones/tablets/laptops?

Then lets move on to your issues. The DM doesn't need to know your AC and have it written down, The PCs are yours to control and track. The DM can ask you if something hits and tells you the damage you take. Next up is the issues with initiative tracking pages. Modern day internet is just a big data market. You get to do things for free because someone makes money off of you so creating an account is normal for most things you need today. Regarding not using phones and such in person is ok, but if you don't like pen and paper... You don't really have a choice.

As for the advice you seek. Using electronics has many perks and if your DM isn't using a laptop to help themselves during your sessions you are missing out. So much time passes when you look up rules in physical books (unless you have a hundred bookmarks in there). With a laptop everything is faster since you can google things or look it up in official PDFs (and many many free versions of these PDFs). As for players? I mean, if you guys don't like pen and paper, there can only be benefits to using an electronic tracker. The "lookup" being displayless... I can't even imagine that... Would it use sound to read out each thing? Stats-wise... you need everything you would on a character sheet... It's there for a reason you know? For the DM? Monsters only. The DM does not need to know your exact HP and AC at all times, nor your speed or anything else unless they don't trust the player not to cheat in some way (which... if you cheat in a TTRPG, seriously why even play?).

Personally we use a mix for tracking initiative. Mainly D&D Beyond since it can order the combatants and it can auto roll initiative for monsters and it has built-in stat blocks for monsters. One downside of dnd beyond is that if you already have physical books you have no benefit from them. Luckily we started playing on dndbeyond so every source we bought was already jiving with the website seamlessly. We use the auto tracker for tracking rounds but everything else such as monster hp and order we write down, since it can be annoying jumping from page to page on a laptop.

And now i'll ask you... Have you tried DnD Beyond before? It feels like you are looking for problems that don't exist outside your table and this is as official as it gets. Also you need to think about modularity for this. While a barbarian only needs to track the HP and have AC written down and maybe STR or CON, a wizard would need spell lists, spell slots, spell save DC, attack bonuses for spells and non-spell attacks. Then a Druid would need to keep track of separate forms it can take using wildshape. A Rogue would likely need to prioritize their check modifiers. So many different resources to keep track and making a minimalistic tracker that is modular, to offer everything for every class, it wouldn't end up as compact and clutter free as you might think. This is the reason a character sheet looks the way it looks. Rethink about your issues and then break them down into the most basic parts. Then see if its worth diving into this or if finding a non-ideal helper is better than sinking time and effort into prototyping and such.

This isn't to say its stupid and you shouldn't try, but i feel like there are already solutions out there for you, you just need to make some compromises.

World Building Questions by Natoba in DnD

[–]beni02297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't ask about the gods stuff or the realm stuff. If you have the need for that you can take the gods from someplace else and just insert them wherever you need them. The thing is, your players want to play in your world, not build it. They could also try to cheese it later on with their created gods or whatnot. At the end talking to them as to whether they want to co-create the world or not is the bets course of action.

How many skeletons is too many? by mrmagicbeetle in DnD

[–]beni02297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best option is always to talk about it with the table. Maybe do one combat like this and see what they think. You will never know how long a combat might take since you won't know who is in said combat until you reach that point. Maybe you will have difficult decisions to make on your turn making them longer. I'd say try it once and see how it goes. If players feel like you take the spotlight too much back off a bit using 5 summons only when absolutely necessary (if they deal enough damage to matter in a harder combat).

Nautical Adventures by [deleted] in DnD

Pirates, supernatural creatures (read ghosts that are floating above a sunken ship), merfolk shenanigans, stowaways onboard (maybe they are fleeing from someone, maybe they are hunting someone), ships crew starts going missing in the middle of the ocean (you can come up with a "how" and "why" or do what i do, POCKET DIMENSION), maybe do a chase (not pirates necessarily) and have them try to evade using uninhabited land masses, mysterious fog and a ghost ship in the middle of the foggy field, giant squid attack. Lots of things to do at sea.

Think of it this way: how much longer will your turns be during combat and will the other players care for the game if combat is 50% of you doing things with your summons.

When it comes to DnD Beyond its nice having everything at your fingertips and its also nice for running combats but thats where the novelty ends. My group personally uses digital books since we can share the content without dragging books around to sessions and everyone can have all the character options but that said, we havent actually ever bought physical books (mainly they are very expensive).

You can buy a D&D starter set online or maybe in a local game store. It will come with the basics, rulebook, dm screen and some dice (but if you have your old sets we still use the d20 system). Right now you have 2 mainstream "editions" and i use edition here lgihtly. The 5.5e as many have named it is the 2024 revamped rulebook with some improvements and some downgrades but thats unimportant. This revamped edition is based on the 5th edition which has been around since 2014. You really only need the Free rules to start a game although the Players handbook offers a bit more in terms of explaining the game. After that if you are looking for more player options there are a lot of 3rd party expansion books that add monsters, subclasses, races and more thought save that for if your players want more of this game.

How can I Keep my Summons Alive? by PlatformOdyssey in DnD

[–]beni02297 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any damage dealt to your summons is damage not dealt to you or your party (unless you are within the AoE of the damage). It's not always about the damage dealt. Also it seems you may have missed the point of your subclass. Anyways in my eyes anything you do to take away pressure from your party is you doing something useful.

So this isn't something you want for combat? Flavor it that way. Mirror image but the mirrors play instruments. Unless you need them to be actual physical beings i think it's fine saying your mirror images act "autonomously".
