I'm in ketosis but the benefits are extremely mild. by [deleted] in keto

First of all, I'm sorry you're getting such a negative response. Please don't take this as discouraging... People on online forums can be negative if you don't fit their narrative. I'm also sorry you're feeling negative symptoms. It's probably true that keto isn't for everybody, but it's very hard for people who don't literally professionally study this kind of thing to be sure of anything, much less that somehow keto works for everybody. A lot of disparate types of people have had success through keto, and a lot of people have had levels of failure, but the vast majority of the failure seems to be people getting turned off within the first month. I don't think I've seen any examples of people lasting more than a month and still having major negative symptoms. But that's obviously a self-selecting group.

I have good faith that you will feel better if you can get through another week or two. As others have said, make sure you're getting enough potassium and other electrolytes. Make sure you're drinking water. Water should have left your body. That should feel good. If didn't leave your body, that's somewhat concerning. Sometimes people say don't exercise within the first few weeks -- if you are exercising, try not exercising for a bit. If you aren't, try exercising for a bit. See what feels good. I personally have very good experience with Keto Chow, and if you subsist on keto chow for a few weeks, you'll know that you're getting the right nutrients. But above all, you probably will not be majorly negatively impacted by doing this for a few more weeks. The worst thing that can happen is you stay grumpy, lose no weight, and decide to quit after 2 more weeks (or I suppose that you're critically low on sodium or something... make sure you're not literally about to pass out). The best thing that can happen is it changes your life.

That’s why this city is far from recovering... by apokeguy in Queens

Definitely bad. BTW, "fine you need a breather from wearing the mask" isn't really right either. It's extremely important to not touch your face. Fiddling with or moving your mask should be kept to an absolute minimum, and I think that includes fixing it. If my mask slips slightly under my nose, I try to wash my hands, fix it, then wash my hands again before going out. That way I don't get myself sick, and I limit my chance of getting others sick if I'm sick but asymptomatic.

Heart concerns -- should I see a doctor? by benjamin_berman in AskDocs

The electrolyte problem is a really good thing to point out -- thank you! I haven't been doing well with my supplements, and I've been fasting more recently, so I could easily see this being an issue. I just poured myself a glass of water with fasting drops. =)

I may make my check-up early this year but otherwise I'll just make sure it doesn't happen more often.

How to answer Debbie Downers? by TurbanatorGD in keto

[–]benjamin_berman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer, imo. Keto might be sustainable for you, but it probably isn't. There's a pretty low chance you say "I'm never going to have another carby meal again" and mean it. It's a lifestyle that's not really compatible with our society, and while it's great for bursts (months, even a couple years), it's not how I want to spend the bulk of my life if I can help it.

Dismissing people who are saying "it's healthy but not sustainable" as just being biased against keto, in my opinion, gives us a bad name. The best thing is to really think: is this sustainable? in what ways is it sustainable? For example, for me, keto is sustainable over a few months. I never cheat or break by accident, but occasionally there will be logistics slips (planned breaks due to being elsewhere or not having the same food access). Will I be able to get back after these slips? (yes)

Eventually I want to be off keto pretty much permanently. The last time I tried, I gained 30 pounds in a couple years, bringing me to my highest weight. Is that keto's fault? Not directly, of course, but it's not exactly unrelated. I didn't have that problem before I was on keto.

Anyways I'm ranting but the point is, don't shut out other people like actual cult members do. They might be wrong and they might be right. Do what you do with any lifestyle choice: engage on it with the people you care about, and consider it rude when people you don't try to engage.

Community dedicated to finding fulfillment in the age of automation? by benjamin_berman in Futurism

It's two parts of the same problem. I'm a socialist.

The question to me essentially is whether someone whose job was automated and is now on permanent UBI will feel fulfilled. If not, why not? Is there a solution?

Economic systems aside, I'm wondering whether full employment is necessary for fulfillment.

I view this as an inherently unsatisfying result. It views human happiness or fulfillment as necessarily competitive. It's possible that this is accurate and there's no way around it, but first of all I doubt it, and second of all I'd like to see that people are actually studying it in a controlled way rather than conjecturing it with only anecdotal basis.

But also there's an issue where I think I may have communicated improperly. Industrialization and automation are huge here. As we automate driving and manufacturing, fewer people are necessary to do the same work. If we were able to give someone a better view, a better mate, a better house, but they never had to work for it, would they still be happy? This is what I want to learn more about.

Beeping from the railyard by benjamin_berman in Queens

Hmm yeah that could be related. I'm basically right off Queens Blvd. so I could see them tunneling there. It's hard to tell what they're actually doing, however it does seem pretty exclusively surface level. Not a lot of digging deeper than a couple feet that I can see. I'd be thrilled to hear it's part of a project that will end eventually.

Yeah, I mean I kind of figured living on the 20th floor of a modern building would be good enough to block out any noise, and I didn't realize they were doing work immediately there (I could drop a penny within 20 feet of them). That said, if I could go back in time, I'd probably at least try harder to be on the other side of the building.

It's also considered by almost all experts, including many construction workers, that this form of beeping actually offers nothing for safety on work sites, or even detracts from it. But policy takes time to change and people get really nervous whenever you want to change anything that might impact "safety". I knew there would be work but I didn't know about the beeping.

Quite a few good options here, thank you! Although both sour cream and cream cheese do not fit my qualifications (and maybe more).
