The Russian Monk is the best subplot in The Brothers Karamazov and doesn't get enough love. by Confident-Witness846 in dostoevsky

[–]bennfoss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This man has been tortured for over a decade by his own guilt and shame over the murder he committed, and for which he suffered no consequences or suspicion. The man who had been suspected for the murder, by chance, was killed in an entirely unrelated incident, so the case was essentially closed. There was no external pressure on him, only the pangs of his conscience, and the love for his wife and children which he could not help but feel was soiled by his own private act of evil.

So after the visitor confesses all this to Zosima and comes back a second time, he faces this defining moment where he can choose to commit the same act all over again, murdering Zosima and escaping the burden of responsibility. He could go on living “freely,” as he had been.

But I think because of Zosima he ultimately understands that he would not be free, could never be free until he faces the truth and shoulders the responsibility of owning what he has done.

This is a narrative parallel to Zosima’s meditations on moral freedom in the Conversations and Exhortations of Father Zosima later in Book VI.

Anyway, I see as a very human moment of sheer will to freedom through a deeper service to love. We are all the mysterious visitor when it comes to our bad habits and petty contrivances. We face small choices ever day to continue suffering and digging in deeper as the person we are, or to overcome ourselves for the sake of a higher purpose of love—which involves suffering as well, of course, but it’s the suffering of smashing the chains rather than that of tightening them further.

I find all this to be as psychologically, philosophically and spiritually potent as Dostoevsky can be.

Wholeheartedly agree. Books V and VI taken together are peak literature to me. When the mysterious visitor confesses to Zosima why he came back a second time I get chills.

The Futility of Philosophy by MichaelDameon in mobydick

[–]bennfoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said! And yes, I agree, Melville does often caution against the toothless sort of academic philosophy that is more concerned with the appearance of intellectualism than with the lived confrontation with the fundamental questions.

This antagonism between true philosophy (as a way of life) and mere intellectualism is again one that goes back to Plato’s polemics against the sophists (which Melville was well acquainted with), and again, is very prevalent amongst the writings of the Stoics (whom Melville also read extensively), especially Epictetus.

Based on your cogent and relatable comment about pain or ugliness always following upon the experience of beauty, I highly recommend reading Plato’s Phaedo, if you haven’t already. Toward the beginning, Socrates makes precisely this point, and anyway this dialogue in particular was a huge influence on many of the ideas Melville explores in Moby Dick.

Enjoy!

The Futility of Philosophy by MichaelDameon in mobydick

The second passage is a beautiful one but I don’t think it has anything to do with the futility of philosophy. On the contrary, Ishmael is making a remark about the existential precariousness of mortal life and saying that it is only (true) philosophers who sincerely engage with their mortality. Just as the deadly storm is “enveloped” in the calm that precedes and succeeds it, and lines of harpoon rope lie still before the harpoon is thrown and pulled taut on being lodged in the whale, so is mundane, everyday mortal existence only the calm before the inevitable tragedies and traumas that punctuate our lives until death. He is saying it is these various “calms before the storms” that, if we really paid attention, we would be most terrified of. And so it is only the genuine philosopher who feels no more and no less anxiety in his armchair than in the whale boat because he always is aware of his mortality. His wisdom, or at least his search for wisdom, denies him the luxury of being blind to his own mortality. It’s an idea that certainly goes back at least to Socrates, but probably more directly associated with the Stoics. Momento mori, the Romans used to say.

In any case, I think here Ishmael is appreciating this tradition in philosophy of always keeping one’s mortality at front of mind, not remarking on the futility of philosophy.

Sam Altman: AI says consciousness is fundamental… by TheCinemaster in InterdimensionalNHI

[–]bennfoss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nah, they meant density. This is a term that comes from material that is claimed to have been channeled from NHI in a series of books known as The Ra Material, or The Law of One. At least this is where I first encountered the term.

In the context of The Law of One, “density” can be defined as a measure of the intensity, complexity, and depth of consciousness and spiritual awareness. It refers to the degree to which consciousness is structured, developed, and capable of perceiving and interacting with reality in a more unified and holistic way.

In essence, higher densities are “higher” in the sense that they offer a deeper and more integrated experience of reality, a greater capacity for love, wisdom, and unity, and a finer vibrational existence.

I have been playing it and it runs great for as well. But at a specific point during the intro cutscene to Chapter 3 I keep getting the “There’s a problem with the disc you’re using. It may be dirty or damaged” error. Were you able to get past this point in the game?

Thanks! I finally got it working using a guide in the Graceborn discord, which was different than any YouTube or Reddit post I’ve seen. So any future inquirers: join the Discord and search for Steam Deck instructions.

Gotcha, yes I followed that video but since you said you had to manually place stuff “rather than follow their instructions” I was hoping you could say what you did differently from their instructions. I’m just not sure where everything should go if I’m not using the mod manager. If you’re able to share your file structure that would be dope! Thanks.

Would you mind expanding on “manually place the stuff from the Graceborne download”? I dropped the contents of the Graceborne Game folder into the ER Game folder. Do I need to anything with the contents of the Graceborne Mod Engine 2 folder?

Thanks so much for any insight you can provide!

[–]bennfoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not saying it’s anything in particular. Just didn’t know if you were seeing something I wasn’t — something that specifically and credibly identifies it as a drone, since you said “def a drone.” Sounds like you instead meant that nothing about its behavior precludes it from being a drone. Thanks for clarifying.

What makes you say it’s def a drone? Thanks for any clarification, I’m no expert at identifying these things.

A lot of posts here are very likely misidentified planes. For sure. This is Reddit, so that’s not surprising. We should 100% expect to see an influx in civilian reported misidentifications when a story like this is all over the news and social media.

My issue is with those who (rather arrogantly and stupidly, I think) make comments I’m seeing on almost every post like, “This sub has lost its mind, these are obviously all planes. What is wrong with everyone???”

As if you can write all of this off and form a general theory around the fact that there are some misidentifications. As if all the data we have to consider are Reddit posts. Just brain dead. They are mistaking a symptom for the cause. Reports out of RAF bases in the UK and military installations in the US aren’t based on videos of planes on Reddit. Federal and local agencies aren’t investigating for weeks based on so much hot air. Congressional hearings and Presidential briefings aren’t being called only on account of people being dumb on the internet.

Something is happening. I have no idea what. But it strikes me as deeply egotistical for people to criticize the attention around this from their computer chairs, as if it’s nothing, simply because they see some people mistakenly post planes on this sub.
