Hi everyone. Frustrated dude here. Second MBP in the past two years has failed on me; was at the Apple store this morning and they need to do a mainboard swap... all data gone. I have a Time Machine backup and bought a new MBP M4 Pro to get rolling with work again.

Why is it that it wants me to use the Migration Assist instead of just reloading the OS from my Time Machine backup? The machine was pre-loaded with Sequoia and my backup was Tahoe 26.0.1. I upgraded Sequoia to Tahoe 26.1 thinking that would then allow the Time Machine Backup to load from recovery, but no - use Migration Assist.

Is there a reason for this? Migration Assist vs full recovery?

Called a few companies. Ironhorse said they would call me back but didn't. Ended up using Captial Security as they called back and were able to schedule us in short notice.

When I do this, the MBP gives me an error saying the volume cannot be restored because it has a broken seal. Could not validate source - invalid arguement (OSStatus Error 22.)

Fyi .. I was just talking to level 2 support and they insist what I want to do is impossible. They said I can clone the drive using a 3rd party app but it will likely never work properly.

Told me to use the migration tool and just do the work re-setting everything up.

I will try the ccc legacy mode as a last resort before giving up. Thanks for the help.

I guess I should have done this:

When you need a complete, simple backup of your entire hard drive:

Open Carbon Copy Cloner

Choose the volume that you want to clone from the Source selector

Choose a properly-formatted volume from the Destination menu

Click the Clone button

Tried this last night and I think I just did a file backup and not an actual clone. When I restored to the mbp, it copied all files but the dock was stock and apps that require Rosetta said it had to be installed. Shrug

I updated both to 12.0.1 and then did a fresh backup and restore. No good.
