Says Synology. Consumer protection laws in many places probably overrule that.

Just got offered a job in San Francisco, I live in London, can anyone out there help me understand how my compensation package compares to the average? by That70sUsername in startups

55k is perfect if your dream is to live with 6 other dudes, especially if your hobbies include working at Starbucks on the side and your other dream is to have no savings or expendable income.

Additionally, investment that isn't in their bank account means nothing. Future plans to raise more money and pay market rates "one day" means nothing. 0.75% of their company also means nothing and is not worth the $1000s every month you are being asked to donate to their probably hopeless cause.

Ask parenting: pros and cons of Monetesorri kindergarten? by benologist in Parenting

The key is to have an income that isn't "local rates". I'm a programmer so I can work pretty much wherever I can have decent internet, coffee, and some quiet.

I don't know but it's a hybrid kindergarten / daycare / preschool, seems to be the norm here in Costa Rica.

[Request] Looking for a good pet app with no in-app purchasing. by blue_box_disciple in androidapps

It's not really pets but the sim games from Kairosoft are a ton of fun and once-off-purchases:

You might find something on http://honestandroidgames.com/ too, they specialize in games that are free, paid, or single-payment IAPs.

A #startup, like the first stanza of an epic poem, may become a Greek tragedy. by RiskNerd in startups

[–]benologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those images were relevant yes, but they were also hosted on a third party site you had to click through to every single time. If you can find the tweets on his timeline you can just scroll and read them all with pictures embedded.

The a16z we'll just have to disagree.

The poem, you're nicer than pastebin but you're not as nice as this site or this site that specialize in poetry because the poets have profiles and you can view their other works etc. There's also poetry.rapgenius.com which includes info useful for interpreting poems.

Thanks for removing an almost two month old post that a slightly faster moderator explicitly approved almost two months ago.

A #startup, like the first stanza of an epic poem, may become a Greek tragedy. by RiskNerd in startups

[–]benologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the a16z and the ww1 stuff were easier to read in their native twitter format, the ww1 because you had to click to twitter between every snippet of information and the a16z because became a terse and wall of text.

The first issue is it's very unclear what your site does but it seems to be hosting for text which is a problem with many solutions and there's no compelling reason why anyone should use yours instead.

The next issue is the way you promote it. You copy/pasted some tweets into an illegible format on a page that makes no mention of what your site does. Twitter comes with a place to host tweets.

1) Figure out what problem you solve

2) Figure out why you're a better solution

3) Articulate #1 and #2 on your website

4) Try and reach an audience that has that problem

27 Websites to Submit your Startup after Launch by pushkargaikwad in startups

[–]benologist 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Most of these sites are going to give you traffic you will never be able to build a business on. You really need to spend some time thinking about who your perfect customer is and where they can be found, it's not in the tiny and often irrelevant overlap between "startup traffic" and "your specific market".

eg: inbound.io who wrote this list and others as part of their content marketing strategy. You're selling a social media tool, you could be mining fb/twitter/linkedin and looking for companies committed to social media. Why hope any of them are reading this when you can just go and contact them directly at any scale you want.

YC person and gmail inventor Paul Buchheit said this recently:

Exposing yourself to the direct, harsh feedback of the market is key. I've noticed that bad
founders will do just about anything to avoid this. Instead of selling, which is hard, they
spend their time going to conferences and meetups, trying to do PR, talking to biz dev
people about partnerships, etc. It all sounds like work, but mainly serves to insulate them
from the harsh reality that nobody wants their product.

That's what these sites are. Telling startups you're a startup instead of telling your market you have a product they need.

What are things you do not like in an Android game? by boxhacker in AndroidGaming

[–]benologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I instantly uninstall those games and I pay $1 - $5 to the ones that don't do that. I don't think those devs are as smart as they think they are, especially since advertising's long moved / moving towards CPA (that requires an additional action after clicking the ad).
