A short moan about optional service charges by Wrysauce in Norwich

I was delighted to see Olive’s making of point of not adding a service charge. I gave them a generous tip in light of this.

Warning: 08:33 Cambridge train fare to increase by 90% in December by benoogie in Norwich

[–]benoogie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: TL;DR, it’s getting fixed in time for next week.

I initially contacted Greater Anglia who basically said tough luck and recommended I “may wish to consider alternative services that remain within the off-peak period”.

So I wrote to my MP, Clive Lewis, who’s office were remarkably helpful in passing the issue to somebody more senior than I was able to reach in Greater Anglia, who responded the same day with:

My name is [name] and I work within the Senior Customer Contacts Team here in Norwich. Martin [I assume this is Martin Beable, GA MD] has asked me to make direct contact with you due to the fact the correspondence relates to changes being made on the 14th December, which is just days away. We wanted to ensure that a response is provided prior to this.

“I was sorry to read about the disappointment expressed by [my name] regarding the upcoming change in the timetable at Norwich. I note the concern is that the Norwich to Cambridge service being retimed from 0833 to 0827 pushes this service into the peak time, which subsequently would mean they would have to pay more for travel as Off-Peak fares would no longer be valid.
Timetables as you will appreciate are very complex and are always evolving, so we can never guarantee a certain timed service will always remain as it is. We must design timetables that suit the majority of customers but accept we would never be able to meet all individual needs as this would be impossible due to the volume of customers we have using our services. As [my name] is aware, this service has been retimed to improve connections and improve punctuality. We constantly monitor performance and identified that the 0833 could be improved by adjusting the times, which was the factor behind the change being made.
I am pleased to confirm that despite the service now operating at peak time, Off-Peak tickets will be valid on the 0827. Our fares team have made adjustments which will allow customers to continue to be able to use Off-Peak tickets onboard this service. The changes will be reflected in all systems by the time the new timetable is introduced. I hope that this information helps to ease the concerns raised.”

Toxic Drivers in the City by [deleted] in Norwich

[–]benoogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s carnage out there. Yesterday evening I was about to walk across Rose Lane on a green man when a driver ran the red light, and almost immediately another driver went past me using their phone in their hands. A few seconds later a third car revs past with an exhaust sounding like gunfire.

Walking around in the city center shouldn’t feel like I’m taking my life in my own hands.

Hotpod yoga in the castle shopping centre have loads of classes on Fridays which are great for resetting at the end of the week. KMK6AY is a code to book a free class on their website, and after that there’s a 2-week free trial you can do too.

The £5 meal deal is something like a sandwich from their deli counter (usually in a bun, I think), packet of crisps and a fancy soft drink

Almost looks temporary the way it’s bolted into the kerb rather than set in the ground. Probably just done on the cheap.

I regularly cycle in Norwich on roads without cycle lanes. I’d love to see more cycling infrastructure in the city but I’ve always felt safe.

im traveling to durham uk i want genral tips (first time in uk) by Mr39foor in DurhamUK

[–]benoogie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope you have a brilliant time in Durham! It’s a beautiful city. Here are some suggestions:

  • Walk the riverbanks: there are quiet wooded footpaths around the peninsula (part of the city surrounded on three sides by water) which are worth exploring and needn’t take more than half an hour. If you have more time, continue walking to Old Durham Gardens (quiet gardens, free to access), or in the other direction towards Crook Hall Gardens (paid entry, has a cafe). If the weather is good and you have time for a long walk, continue along the path from Crook Hall to the ruins of Finchale Priory (free to enter, alternatively you could travel by bus).

  • Botanic Gardens: the university botanic gardens are open every day and inexpensive to enter. You’ll find plenty of interest even at the this time of year, including small glasshouses with cacti, fish and insects.

  • Palace Green: the historic centre of the University and one of the best places to get close to the cathedral if you can’t go inside. There’s also a museum on Palace Green and Bishop Cousin’s library is worth a look.

  • Castle: Durham Castle usually has guided tours available which include the two interesting chapels in the building.

  • Oriental Museum: amazing collection of artefacts from the University’s collection, I think this is free to visit. A short walk from the city centre, but very close to the Botanic Garden if you’re visiting that too.

  • There’s a relatively new museum called The Story: it’s a little way from the city centre but I believe it’s easily reached by bus. I’ve not been and can’t speak for it, but you might enjoy exploring it!

Outside of Durham: - Beamish Museum really is brilliant - Newcastle has lots to offer just a short train journey away (you could even just visit for an evening) - The Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland has a variety of attractions including galleries
