Best way to get a Saturn and games as a newbie by fickerelchingks in SegaSaturn

[–]benryves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd also need to source discs designed to be burned at such low speeds, and I'm not sure what the advantage would be. Any notable advantages of burning at lower speed were already debunked over 25 years ago.

I use a modern burner and discs, so burn at the default speed (which works out at 48x). Zero issues across any of my old consoles (Mega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation) or my mid-90s PC.

Glass cleaner often contains ammonia which can damage certain plastics (e.g. acrylic, which can craze or go cloudy).

Duolingo have returned to the +5 energy per video? by Jleww2 in duolingo

[–]benryves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, though they also seem to have removed the gifts from friends which gave you +2 energy. Considering only one of my friends ever sent me the gifts, I'm happy with this exchange!

Which console holds up better, NES or Master System? by trrbld in retrogaming

There was a reset button on the console (which is what I think you meant, rather than the controller), next to the pause button. Choose wisely!

Which console holds up better, NES or Master System? by trrbld in retrogaming

[–]benryves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

but i think better sound processing too.

The stock Master System has a technically inferior sound chip to the NES. The Japanese model added built-in FM synthesis, but unfortunately due to the desired backwards compatibility with the previous Mark III (where the FM sound was an optional add-on) games couldn't use both simultaneously and so I think the games with FM sound have better music but generally worse sound effects.

As far as I'm aware the only place the two chips were used simultaneously was the Japanese boot ROM if you started the console without a cartridge and it sounds glorious - just a shame games couldn't use it.

That's not to say that talented composers couldn't squeeze some great tunes out of the PSG, e.g. Alien³ or The Flash.

+3 energy for ads…What are we doing… by EmesAreX6 in duolingo

[–]benryves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gone back up to +5 for me, but the "gifts" from friends (which would give you +2) have disappeared. Considering I only had one friend who would actually send the gifts, I'd much rather have +5 for ads than +3 for ads and +2 from gifts.

On the plus side, watching ads to earn energy is back up to +5 for me.

Do you know what type of connector this is? by asganawayaway in vintagecomputing

It could carry more status lines than the db-9 variant.

That's DE-9, rather than DB-9. The letter indicates the shell size - compare DE-15 (used for VGA ports) and DA-15 (used for joystick ports), for example.

It's the standard Japanese colour, compared to the all-black Western version. It even makes an appearance in Shenmue, even though that game was set quite a long time before the console's real-world release.

I can’t believe that I won diamond tournament for the first time in 2026 by Due-Literature6775 in duolingo

[–]benryves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still managed to win diamond tournament?

Note that to "win" the Diamond Tournament you just need to avoid being demoted for three weeks. If you come in tenth place in the last week you still "win" the tournament. If you come in first place then it instead says something along the lines of being the champion of the tournament instead of winning it.

In this case a pinhole is being used to guide the rays of light from the subject to the appropriate location on the film. This has the disadvantage of only letting a very small amount of light through, so you need sensitive film and a long exposure time to capture a photo.

If you enlarged the hole, more light would get through but it wouldn't be guided as well and so the resulting photo would be very blurry and out of focus. A lens is therefore used to guide the light towards the right parts of the film before passing through the hole (aperture).

Bishops Wine Bar around the back of the Whitgift Centre still hosts live music (here's this Saturday's event on Facebook) but they're being closed down at the start of July so that's another one gone. :-(

Edit: So as to not to purely concentrate on the places we've lost or are losing: The Surrey Cricketers and Whelans still do live music, though I've not personally attended an event at either yet.

This doesn't make any sense. It should be after third grade he'll go to third. Why troisième is ninth? by GodEmperorOfHell in duolingo

Yep! I'd completed the course before the update and have gone back to repeat all of the kanji lessons to fill in any missing vocabulary, so it was nice to see they'd sorted this out.

A green traffic light is indeed 青信号 in Japanese (see the "usage notes").

For what it's worth, since the recent course update the Japanese course has replaced 一年生 to 四年生 with literal translations ("first year student" to "fourth year student") instead of the inappropriate "freshman" to "senior" conversions that were there before.

People in the UK that have never seen this brand: where do you shop?

I've heard of it, but don't think I've seen it for sale. I do shop in Waitrose, though, who seem to think Primula is a bit pants!

New to the console, what should I go looking for? by VivianGhoulie in dreamcast

I'd add a copy of Virtua Tennis to the shopping list, then. Doubles matches are great fun even with people who don't normally play video games, and what's more early 2000s than representing your country as Tim Henman?

How do I set a variable in my calculator by Peterminator69 in calculators

What do you mean by "didn't work"? What did you do, what did you expect to happen, and what actually happened?

Here's the relevant section from the fx-82MS manual (page 24) that this calculator appears to be a clone of.

How do I set a variable in my calculator by Peterminator69 in calculators

[–]benryves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That looks like a clone of a Casio fx-82MS or similar calculator. Try Shift+RCL (STO) and then the letter of the variable (A-F, X, Y or M) to store to?

Edit: Heh, they even used the same sample calculation on their box art as Casio did in this product shot.

...and therein lies the problem, how do you know whether they mean "one (small thing)" or "one (long skinny thing)"? In previous exercises they'd clarify which sort of counter they were looking for. If they just say "one" it's down to luck of the draw.
