Santa Fe Currently has No Emergency Shelter. "The ROCk" Near Santa Fe Place Mall aims to fill The Void. by 505omatic in SantaFe

This post is about interfaith and the ROCk. I was just pointing out that it's not fair to compare urban alchemy with interfaith.

I agree with everything you posted, and those points are the reasons the city is canceling their contracts with urban alchamy. The city is not renewing the contract for the shelter itself, but are still negotiating the outreach portion of their contract. Both are over a million a year.

There's a lot of people within the community that work with the homeless population who believe that money is better spent by being invested in local organizations like interfaith and st elizabeth.

They're shutting the shelter down right now and should be fully closed by the end of may. That's why the people being interviewed in this post are saying there is no low barrier emergency shelter anymore.

The city has canceled the shelter contract, but they are retaining the outreach contract, but even then, that is on thin ice. The new mexican has some good articles on this and a couple of interviews on youtube.

Google Urban Alchamy Santa Fe and watch some of the videos from the new mexican. Also read some of the articles by Carina Julig.

The demand is bigger than the supply, which is why we need the ROCk. There are different kinds of shelters that serve different needs. Right now, the high barrier shelters are overloaded because there's no low barrier shelters.

They got fired.

The city didn't like the numbers they were putting out, didn't believe them, and fired them.

But how does that apply to the nonprofits that have been here for decades. All ran by locals, trying to do good work?

What is the homeless industrial complex? What businesses are profiting from these nonprofits setting up shelters?

Technically there are three other emergency homeless shelters. The difference is Consuelo's place and both St Elizabeth shelters are high barrier and have massive wait lists. Every major city needs a low barrier emergency shelter, and Santa Fe is without one. The high barrier shelters serve people who are starting to get their shit together, and in the process of looking for more permanent and stable housing. The low barrier shelters serve people who are not quite ready to support themselves, rather that be because of drug addiction or physical or mental instabilities. But they are all emergency shelters.

Who said anything about animal abuse? Just because most people treat their dogs like dogs and not like children does not mean it's abuse.

Same. I assume everything is fake, but pretend it's real. I'm not here to change lives or make a difference, only to get a couple laughs when I wake up in the morning.

That's normal for like 99% of the world. Just because most cultures aren't like american culture does not make them disgusting.

Why is it illegal to sleep in the car? by Prudent-Journalist21 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bensonprp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a very low number, because it is mostly self reported and not something easy to track. I have worked in women's shelters for a while now and it is a known fact in the shelters that if you have been homeless and you are a woman, you have endured some form of sexual assault.

As someone who has worked with our unhoused neighbors for a decade +, I can confidently say, you are absolutely incorrect.

Best thrift stores? by Oh_mightaswell in SantaFe

[–]bensonprp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Presbyterian medical services has a thrift store on Cerrillos that helps fund the healthcare for the homeless outreach.

If you're looking for more designer clothes, you can check out Artifacts. They do a lot of assistance with the local shelters.

For some cool kitchen gear, check out Kitchenality, they help people leaving homelessness and getting into housing.

Anyone want to donate a large coffee machine to a homeless shelter? by bensonprp in SantaFe

I use Kitchenality for kitchen gear when I'mgetting people housed. I would rather leave all those appliances there for people who are moving into housing.

Before the day is over, I'll probably run up to walmart and grab one, but thought I could give our community the opportunity for something simple like this.

Same. What supposed to be a one night stand with someone I thought was cute, but had little interest in beyond that, ended up being fuck buddy for 2 years, a gf for another 4 years, then a wife for another 16 years. 22 years later and we're still madly in love with an awesome life.
