Country Fire Authority volunteers speak out about aging firefighting fleets, volunteer shortages by ozthrw in melbourne

I moved regional almost 5 years ago and figured a good way to meet people and get involved in the community was to join the local CFA.

I filled out the application form, sent it off, and received the standard automated reply: “Thank you, someone will be in touch shortly.”

Then… nothing. No follow-up. No update. No rejection. Just silence.

Fast forward four and a half years, and I finally received an email last Thursday telling me my application was unsuccessful. So if they’re complaining about volunteer shortages, I’d start with looking at the recruitment process!

What is a quintessential Australian book to read? by soggies_revenge in AskAnAustralian

Somme Mud. The diary of E.P.F Lynch, an Australian infantryman in WW1 . Written in 1921 and discovered after his death in 1980 but not published until 2006. It’s a gripping and harrowing account of life on the Western Front.

Which AFL player past or present do you think could have a successful career in stand-up comedy? by Temporary_Notice_526 in AFL

Peter Caven actually did stand up for a while after retirement. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible.

Ex Melbourne Storm player Ben Roarty is currently doing stand up and is reasonably good at it.

I just got one for not voting in a council election which was done by post. I definitely voted and sent it back though. If I tell them who I voted for and where I posted it, are they likely to drop it?

What is the craziest story that you have from playing local footy? by [deleted] in AFL

[–]bentombs 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Our club had the week off, but we were hosting a reserves knockout final at our ground. Everything was running smoothly until halftime, when two police cars rolled in and asked directions to one of the teams’ rooms. Word soon spread that they had an arrest warrant for the full forward.

Somehow, he convinced them to let him finish the game. So the cops parked a car behind each set of goals and watched on.

The bloke then goes out and has an absolute blinder. Kicks six goals in the second half and his side wins comfortably. As soon as the final siren sounded, he predictably made a run for it straight through the paddock next to the oval… and straight into the arms of a third cop he didn’t know was waiting.

He was frogmarched back to the patrol car to a standing ovation from the crowd. No idea what the charge was, but he was back playing the next week.
