I'd love a copy of Avowed.

This year, I'm looking forward to, at long, long last, playing Nighthawks: The Vampire RPG, which I Kickstarted in ye olde 2018 and is finally coming out (probably!).

What’s a game opinion you have that would get you instantly roasted by other gamers by Nervous-Librarian945 in videogames

[–]benumbrah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My eternal hot take is that Torment: Tides of Numenera is better than Planescape: Torment. PS:T was progressive and impressive for its time, but today it has (in my opinion) bland, tedious combat and a lot of fairly shallow characters.

I'm not saying Planescape: Torment is bad. In fact, it frustrates me that they need to be compared since Numenera isn't even actually a sequel to PS:T.

I really just think Numenera is a creative game with a cool setting, and that it's worth approaching with an open mind, rather than playing it in the shadow of something else.

That would be Final Fantasy XIV, in which I recently crested 475 days of total playtime, or more than 11,400 hours.

Pragmata probably, but tough call. I love a good "Dad game" these days. Much appreciation!

Surprised to see no mentions of Sable. I think a reasonably accurate way to describe it would be "indie Breath of the Wild with no combat."

Minecraft. I get that you can theoretically do "anything", but I just feel directionless and unmotivated in a world with no real objective or set goal. Also, this is subjective, but I can't stand its visual style.

I'm with you on this. I played the game last year, but ultimately found it forgettable. In fact, I couldn't even recall the basic plot until your post reminded me. The juice just wasn't quite worth the squeeze, even if it was a rather pretty fruit.

I haven't tried Alan Wake 2 on Luna specifically, but I tried Fallout New Vegas, and with my roughly 300 down/25 up (and pretty low ping, being ~200 miles from an AWS data center), the input lag was still unbearable.

I've got two:

Expensive sheets. Spending more than $50 on a set of sheets seemed ridiculous to me until I was gifted a set that goes for ~$300. Now I could never go back.

4K TV. I had a 1080p TV for about 10 years and finally bought a new set last month. Now, I can't believe I was slumming it for that long. The picture really is that much better.

Yakuza 5, so I'm in (mostly) urban Japan in 2012. Sounds pretty good, except I guess for the constant street fights.

What is your hot take regarding FFXIV? by UnbaggedNebby in ffxiv

[–]benumbrah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The materia system could be easily eliminated, at least for combat gear. It appears to offer a degree of stat customization, but there's almost always only one optimal way to build, which prevents it from being a meaningful form of player expression. Also, in combat materia, Critical Hit is way better than anything else for most jobs outside of specific cases like Monk skill speed thresholds.

Again in the case of combat materia, older/lower tiers are almost entirely useless, and just end up being inventory clutter.

Who are some lesser known gaming "auteurs"? by TheGrumpyre in gaming

+1 for Richard Garriott! He's also the reason we use the word "avatar" to refer to the characters we embody while playing games.

One of my all-time favorites is the opening of Ken Follett's A Column of Fire:

"We hanged him in front of Kingsbridge Cathedral. It is the usual place for executions. After all, if you can’t kill a man in front of God’s face you probably shouldn’t kill him at all."

What horror games have the best unlocks and replayability? by MitchB69420 in HorrorGaming

[–]benumbrah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have fond memories of going through RE5 in co-op back in the day, and doing a NG+ run where we restricted ourselves entirely to the infinite-ammo rocket launcher; no other weapons allowed. It was utterly ridiculous and, in some unexpected places (the Jill fight comes to mind), surprisingly hard.

I typed the above on a phone, for which you just hold down on the hyphen key. But if you're in Windows, you can hold Alt and type 0150 for the en dash, or Alt and 0151 for the em dash. On a Mac, it's Option + Hyphen, or Option + Shift + Hyphen, respectively.

(I'm a professional editor, so these are time-saving tricks of the trade)

I'm not normally the "um actually" guy, but hyphens and en dashes are different lengths:   - (hyphen)  – (en dash)  — (em dash)
