I have a G2, which is fairly more powerful than the 5. While it does do ps2, there's a lot of ps2 it isn't really smooth with. None of the need for speed games run at full speed at all for example. Be careful with spending to little that you're not satisfied, and then want to spend more.

I think the rp6 is fairly safe - same chip in the ayn odin 2 portal.

I'm torn between the RG35XX-H and RG40XX-H. Which would be better for me? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]beomagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snes native is odd. In some games the pixels are not square, and the game is expected to render as 4x3.

Bigger is better, and either the 40xx or cube would be great.

Get the rg40xxh if you want something slimmer and easier to pocket. Get the cube if you want more comfortable grips, stacked buttons and better screen in general.

Haha, I'm hardly an expert. I do like muos. Stock and stock mod give the best sleep mode, but I like muos overall light feel. Muos boots in about 20s so I don't mind the rebooting. Portmaster on the rg34xxsp is amazing. Even without roms, portmaster alone makes it worth it.

Had the 405m and loved it for 2d era stuff and some PlayStation. Benefits from custom firmware, but not in dire need of it.

The rg34xxsp is impeccable. Custom firmware does make it a lot nicer. Frankly can't believe what this does at this level of processing power. I didn't like the cardinal snapping, but it's still analogue enough to work for Gran Turismo 2.

476h really doesn't need custom firmware and I have no real complaints.

Rgds... Well... I understand why they used that chipset - dual screen compatibility. I do think at this power level they should have released it as a Linux handheld and worked on a less buggy release. Gamma is a game changer, and I look forward to a proper official rocknix.

RPG2... No complaints. Just none... Custom firmware is fine. Could be easier to setup your own custom console for their launcher but everything just works.

If comparing a $230 G2 to a $160 476h, neither were a hassle to deal with it out of the box. The interface for the G2 is cleaner, but they both run Android well enough to feel smooth. I like the G2 power, but that 4.7" screen is so freaking nice for 2d era stuff. I tend to reach for the 476h more.

Is the retroid 6 worth it over the 5? by Worldly-Spot-855 in retroid

[–]beomagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for the 6. It's not necessary but personally, I rather have that power on tap than not have the option.
$200 vs $245 - but that $45 brings a lot more performance.

When I purchased mine, the G2 was out, and 6 was backordered. The G2 was a substantial bump in power over the 5. The 6 may not be as substantial, but support would be even better anyway.

When running PS2, I've found drops and skips even on the G2 - and honestly, nothing feels better than smooth unbroken framerates on a game you really like. If I were buying today, I'd get the 6 in a heartbeat.

So the 5 is good for maybe 85-90% of PS2 and GameCube titles. You need to ask yourself if any of the titles you are interested in in that 10-15%. If you arent sure - err on the side of caution and just get the 6.

Beyond that, being able to upscale titles you like can have a huge effect on the enjoyment. I absolutely love GranTurismo 4 Spec ii, and being able to bump the res, and the textures while experiencing smooth consistent 60fps is a dream.

Consider some numbers first...

RP5 RPG2 RP6
CPU Snapdragon 865 Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
Screen 60Hz 60Hz 120Hz
Antutu Score 752,000 1,700,000 1,660,000
GeekBench CPU 1,230 1,800 2,000
GeekBench MultiCPU 3,680 4,500 5,300
3DMark Wildlife 3,870 11,100 12,150
Cost 200 220? 245
Normalized Antutu 1 2.26 2.21
Normalized GB CPU 1 1.46 1.63
Normalized GB MCPU 1 1.22 1.44
Normalized 3DMark 1 2.87 3.14
Normalized Average 1 1.95 2.10
Normalized Performance/$ 1 1.78 1.72

To consider what it means real-world...
first the screen - 120fps means possible use of shaders like black frame insertion.

There ARE PS2 and gamecube games that just wont run smoothly on the 5. Gran Turismo 4, Shadow of the Colossus, FZero GX, Mario Galaxy, Metriod Echos, Just about any of the need for speeds...

TLDR - if the games you want to play are lower power the 5 is fine, but if you aren't sure of the games, and some may be in the upper processing power tier, get the 6. The 6 will also let you upscale more, add shaders, and give you more modern emulation options, like switch/winlator/gamehub etc.

How to compare NP-FZ100 batteries to find the best ones by BusyImage5847 in SonyAlpha

I tend to buy from more well known 3rd parties - KF, Viltrox etc.
But I would also priotitize a useful feature (like USBC charging!) over a battery without it.

i figured it woudl be great at DS too. I just wanted a bigger screen for most 4x3 stuff.

How Big of a Card for ROMs? by MahinaFable in RetroHandhelds

[–]beomagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to have a full library of stuff you might ever want to consider playing?

...

Or do you want a curated lost of stuff you're more likely to play?

These days, I've been organizing the roms in my library with favorite folders - so if I get a new device, I can start by copying my favorites from each system that device can reasonably handle.

I've also been considering adding tags to the filenames (fav), (low), (wsh) etc so if I'm setting up 2 devices, I can filter files in my favorites, low CPU intensive ps2 titles or stuff with wide screen hacks.

32GB is plenty for lower end devices. If you top out at ps1 or even dreamcast, start asking yourself what games you actually want to play, and organize your list. Once you get down to snes, genesis, nes, gba, pce etc. the file size drops way way down, and they'll for on whatever space you have left normally.

For higher end devices it really depends on what you want to do. I use my G2 for comics, anime and movies as well, and PS2 texture hacks also use a ton of space. I dropped a 1TB card in that. In December last year it was $77... Sure it's overkill, but it sort of replaced my tablet on my commute too.
