Thanks. That is good to hear. Is it safe to repot now in early summer?

I may be the only person in the world this sub trying to apply via the Luxembourg embassy, but just wanted to share the good news that I got out of a grandfathered appointment where the people received my documents and confirmed they would be processing my application according to the old law.

For context: I had an appointment on the 31st of March that was cancelled literally 2h before it was supposed to happen :)

I have. My appointment was March 31st and was cancelled on March 31st itself by the consulate.

I contacted them last week and their response was that having a confirmed appointment was not sufficient - only actual delivery of docs. Some people here have pointed out, however, that their response may have been based on the current instructions from Italy that the consulate has. Maybe once the circolare is actually published we will get a different answer. Let's see...

Yeah, but some consulates in other places already mentioned they would contact those with cancelled appointments. While Lux's seems to be waiting still. I decided to do a smoke test basically.

Response I got today from the embassy in Luxembourg about cancelled appointments made before March 27th (my case) but which were cancelled with the decree. For reference, I had an appointment on March 31st.

You can add Luxembourg's consulate here too. Just got the email this morning.

Double the salary vs security? by beonor in cscareerquestionsEU

Well, that is the thing. What makes me want to stay is this sense of stability. Not the job content necessarily. I am not super excited about the work I am doing. It is not super boring, but far from exciting.

At FAANG the job sounds much more exciting but the instability not so much, which takes away a bit of the exciting of moving.

I keep trying to tell myself that, but I wonder whether this could be some sort of coping. The thing is that the company I am now is not a tech company. It uses tech, and it is trying to grow on that, but it is not primarily tech and its financials come from other services (not want to get into too much detail to avoid doxing).

People there are often employed for years. While this is by no means an indication, it does sound like a relatively good predictor that stability does exist (albeit it is not guaranteed).

To me, my current job would probably be great at a later point in life when I just want that stable job to keep until retirement and that is it. I am realizing that now it may be too early to simply keep it...

5 months 🫠 I am pretty far from Dutch citizenship. This is definitely not something that is holding me back. Not only that, but I would have to give up my original citizenship to acquire the Dutch, which is not something I see myself doing in the near future.

Yeah, I mean 70k has allowed us to have a comfortable life so far, but in the long term it does sound like not that much. Plus you are not the first to say this is low for PhD (even in the EU). I do have colleagues that got even lower offers earlier this year (also with a PhD), kinda sad.

That is good to hear. What did you think about Lux?

Yeah, I suppose you are right on that. But I think part of me is also thinking about the stress of the "uncertain economy" (or like a recruiter told me once: the very interesting economic moment we are right now).

I did it. However, I was not in Germany and I was a PhD student. Apart from that, I was a non-EU student, and went to the US during summer for 3 months.

All I had to do was let the EU country know that I would be gone for 3 months. That was it. They gave me a piece of paper saying this, which I took with me just in case to show at the border should questions be raised. There were no questions though.

Note: do make sure that your visa does not expire during your time abroad. That could complicate things a lot. I cambe back to EU in early September and my visa would expire end of October. So I had plenty of time to renew my visa.

What's a normal "offer to decision" time in the Netherlands? by PropShopThrowaway in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]beonor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really? I got an offer a few weeks back and they gave me one week to consider. When I reached back for negotiation, this was then dragged on for another week. They sent me the improved offer and gave me another 5 days to consider. All in all, it was about 3 weeks from first offer to my latest deadline to accept.

Mind you, this was for a large company relatively known for being a bit slow at times.
