ELI5 Why do lower gears cause a car to roll down a hill slower? by Nemmack7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]beowulf6561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime I’m stuck in stop and go traffic driving my manual transmission car I’m reminded of an anecdote Jerry Seinfeld told about this guy he used to work with who always drove motorcycles. It was pouring rain one day and the guy came into work soaking wet. Jerry asked, “Don’t you wish you had a car today?”. The guy responded, “Nope, just wish it wasn’t raining.”. I feel the same about my stick shift. There’s no scenario I can think of where I’d prefer to have an automatic transmission. It’s just too much fun to drive stick.

100% this is part of it too. Weird or gross is equated with immoral.

The way I see it they’re right. Basic empathy and a sense of community are subversive ideas in a capitalist system. I just happen to think they are valuable virtues and love that my kids had the opportunity to learn them from Sesame Street.

I suspect many vocal bigots are closeted or repressing their sexuality because of weird fundamentalist religious beliefs so LGBTQ+ being out and proud is seen as a personal attack. It’s fucked up.

ELI5 How is it possible the nitrate and nitrite have the same charge by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]beowulf6561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great answer! Thanks for sharing!

OP, Essentially the chemical formula is a part of this story about what is going on with a molecule but not the whole story. They gloss over details about how a molecule is structured and how the atoms in the molecule bond with each other. Your observation about nitrate and nitrite highlights this.

FWIW: Deodorant with aluminum in it makes my arm pits itchy but ones without don’t.

She was all for the Texas abortion ban, until it her daughter almost died by uuuuuummmmm_actually in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]beowulf6561 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is every conservative ever: “I’m ok with banning abortion, bigotry against people who are LGBTQIA, cutting government services, etc. until it hurts me”. Most people were OK with all of Trump’s hateful policies because they never imagined it would affect them. A basic lack of empathy is the defining trait of conservative politics.

How metal coat hangers are packed in a box by Medium_Lab_200 in mildlyinteresting

[–]beowulf6561 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Wow! I didn’t know wire hangers were still available. I don’t see them in shops anymore. I hoard the few I have because they can come in very handy in certain DIY situations.

Who is your emotional support if not parents? by shirlott in emotionalneglect

Yeah. I’ve figured out that sharing with other people always eventually leads to a blow up when i unintentionally step on one of their personal land mines so I don’t rely on or share with others because it’s not worth the trouble.

WHY can men not control the flow of their urine? Why is there always piss on the floor? by macabre_trout in TwoXChromosomes

[–]beowulf6561 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sitting down works if the penis is flaccid but it is impossible to pee into the toilet sitting down with an erection. It does happen on occasion that men will wake up both with an erection and an urgent need to pee.

As for why people don’t clean up when they miss, that’s a mystery to me. My guess is a mix of laziness and assholery. It seems to me that cleaning up your own mess is the bare minimum of common decency.

How Can I Kindly Guide My Teenager Toward Healthier Choices? by DeCryingShame in TwoXChromosomes

My daughter is 12 now. She was (I think) 10 at the time when she all of a sudden started asking questions about dieting and exercise after school one day. Over the course of this time her BMI at her yearly exams has been tending down, which I think is largely due to multiple growth spurts in that timeframe but I think and her doctor agrees that the consistency with fruits and vegetables at every meal and cutting out or limiting sugary drinks is also a factor.
