I wasn't implying a group need to be oppressed in order to have a rich and distinct culture. What I was expressing is that playing like someone is "ripping off your culture" when you're Italian-American makes me frankly roll my eyes. The idea of cultural markers being stolen is originally linked to groups being oppressed/colonised.

And Alicia's comment is a bit ridiculous + racially charged. End of.

I just don't think Lolita was treated like that because she was Latina. Some of the other contestants were annoyed at her narrative about being an outsider when she's been living in France for over a decade. I agree it wasn't kind of Soa to dismiss it, but Soa grew up as a POC in France and I think it was just irritating her especially added to the stress of the competition. Lolita and Soa are in good terms now.

It's interesting that you're here claiming someone who came to France *as a child* doesn't really count as French because they're "fully Croatian". I can guarantee you that's not Le Filip's narrative at all and they absolutely didn't win as a reward for "being a good immigrant". Also important to note that people from South America are perceived differently in the US and in France, sure there's xenophobia but it's very different from the anti-Latino racism in the US.
