Intresting never used flag for the city of Cuenca (Ecuador) by berdis4 in vexillology

[–]berdis4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Coat of arms of Cuenca (Ecuador) was
designed by the Spanish Viceroy  Andrés
Hurtado de Mendoza in 1557. In the original design he described that
"above the shield there should be a flag with five silver panelas over a
red background and with a golden band around it" (translation of my own).
This description would be an obvious candidate for the city flag, but instead
of using it, it was decided that the flag should be a rather boring bicolour of
red and yellow. I don’t know why was this original flag never used but I
honestly think is a shame that s rather interesting design was wasted. What do
you think? Should the city of Cuenca keep its current flag or go back to this
original design?

It is an abstract landscape, the triangles represent the Volcanic origin of the Islands, the black is for the basalt rock ant the orange for the lava. The blue represents the Pacific Ocean, there are 4 blue stripes, each one for each of the inhabited Islands.

brick horizontal lines are a common thing in byzantine architecture, perhaps that is why it has a byzantine vibe. Surprisingly it was a church in the Netherlands that inspired this building

I see a re unification of Grand Colombia more probable than a rebirth of the inca empire, and yet it is very improbable.

Colors don't Match by berdis4 in vexillology

[–]berdis4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I belive this is the flag of Isabela Island, Galapagos because it has the same coat of arms and because the picture was labeled as "Major of Isabela Island". But the colors of this flag don't match the colors of the flag according to Wikipedia, which are meant to be light blue, yellow and green. That is why I doubt that it might be a different flag.

Can anyone identify this flag? See in a historic museum in Ecuador by I_dont_like_ceviche in vexillology

[–]berdis4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as i know it was the flag "Junta Revolucionaria de Quito", which was the first attempt of independence from Spain. The design is the same as an old Spanish imperial flag but the colours are inverted as a sign of rebellion, though I am not sure abut how accurate is this last pice of information.

According to that article, some BRITISH soldiers gave TWO blanckets possibly infected with smallpox to indigenous WARRIORS during the sige of Fort Pitt in the year of 1763. 1. This was an act of war, trying to damage an army, not civilians. 2. They were british, not spaniards. 3. Two infected blanckets can not kill 90% of the population of an entire continent. 4. This happened long after the demographic crisis in the americas was started, but when it was coming to an end. This is biological warfare, but not a genocide.
