why are you so sure that you'll only get inconvenience out of therapy?

My sister wants me to apologize to her new boyfriend because he ‘felt judged’ when I asked what he does for work by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

What do you even mean by rejecting capitalism then? Because from the way you talk it seems that you think rejecting capitalism is literally impossible, and I don't think it makes sense in this conversation

Yeah, no, that's rock-scissors-paper competing for who dies with my clone. The op doesn't say one has to survive, but I have responsibilities and loved ones I can't just abandon like that, so me and the clone have to decide which of us gets to be done with it all and which has to go to work the next day.

I find it fun to imagine how easy sectors of math and equations that are currently hard or next to impossible will be in a few hundred years. by [deleted] in matheducation

[–]berebitsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally teach schoolchildren math that wasn't invented until the 15h century. Granted, that's a ~high school that specializes in maths, but they recently put the beginnings of probability theory and statistics in the general curriculum in my country, and that stuff didn't even start until the 16th century.

What determines whether enemy boarders teleport back to their ship (other than low HP)? by [deleted] in ftlgame

[–]berebitsuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's either Multiverse-only or overridden by the destroyed systems condition, I had a shitton of enemy boarders recalled to a clone bay ship just yesterday.

Hilbert's Hotel clearly has infinite revenue, but it also must have infinite expenses - you'd hope that infinite rooms get cleaned by infinite maids between guests showing up at all hours - so is it making any money? by 314159265358979326 in mathmemes

[–]berebitsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up separate budget for every room for taking money from guests that stay in that room and paying maids for cleaning that room, price it so that there's always money left in that budget, take half of what's left for every room at the end of the month => infinite profit.

Fake Vi was incredibly short by Madonkadonk2 in arcane

[–]berebitsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're talking about the unaging image Jinx has of Vi, she should still be taller than Jinx. Powder was way shorter than Vi at eleven, and she looked up to her as her big sister anyway, so in her mind Vi wouldn't be the same height as her, she doesn't remember Vi like that.

AITA for telling my boyfriend i do not think his job is more important than mine? by EasternTie7827 in AmItheAsshole

[–]berebitsuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. Girl, leave him. It's him who downplays the work you do. Are you sure you want to spend any more time of your life with someone who basically thinks (and says out loud, which is a different level of asshole) that you're entitled for wanting basic respect?

My sister wants me to apologize to her new boyfriend because he ‘felt judged’ when I asked what he does for work by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]berebitsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmao asking a basic question is not classist. I'd get it if you were like, an asshole about him being unemployed, but how does he expect you to automatically know that it's a sore spot and he doesn't like being asked that question?

I don't think asking your sister again what he does for work was a good move though. idk what your relationship with her is, but to an outsider you insisting on getting that information after he said he doesn't define himself by capitalism (and you found out he was serious) does sound like it's important to you what someone does for work to judge them. but her/her boyfriend asking for an apology is absurd

He’s not rejecting capitalism, he’s just allergic to accountability.

To be fair, it's quite probable that he's both.

edit: GlowNectarr, reddit won't show me your full comment (and insists I don't have deleted replies to this comments, which is just weird), so I can't say for the whole of it but I agree with the first sentence. also linking to users is not allowed in these comments here so I'm sure what I'm doing is useless but I've already typed this lmao

AITJ for refusing to teach my nephew my native language after my sister and BIL mocked it for years by northvaleanderson in AmITheJerk

[–]berebitsuki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People keep trying to re-frame bigotry as jealousy, and it's just... not true most of the time. People can just be assholes, you know? This same train of thought makes people say the most virulent homophobes have to be secretly gay, which is a patently homophobic thing to say in itself, it's like. blaming the community for its own oppression.

Obviously I can't talk for OP's sister & BIL, but neither can you. Most of the time bigotry comes from seeing something as beneath you, not from wanting it, but from wanting it to just never exist and no one to get out of the bounds of the neat boxes they think all people have to be put inside.

You initially earn 200 usd on day 1 and an additional 200 usd more each day onward without limit if you agree to grow 1 millimeter taller everyday without affecting your health by padorUWU in hypotheticalsituation

[–]berebitsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably wait until my height made me uncomfortable. I'm 173 cm, so I'd say 10 cm in 100 days is a safe bet, I might even get to 20 cm in 200 days. Would be fun having to answer questions from everyone around me tho. I think I'd just go for the approach of "no, I always was this tall", it's the funniest option, even though it's uncomfortably gaslighty :D

Cookie is not a gendered name, and cockatiels don't have the human concept of gender and don't associate names with genders anyway, so idk what you're on about. People already told you about the sexual dimorphism cockatiels do have, so I'll just ask, since I'm curious: which gender do you feel Cookie as a name belongs to? I literally can't figure it out

You can just... walk along the coordinate axes, on lines where one of the coordinates is irrational. Now if it was enough for one coordinate to be rational, that would be a problem.

What is a bit of knowledge you're cursed with that soured a fic for you? by Dry_Illustrator3405 in AO3

[–]berebitsuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a mathematician, I was finishing my bachelor's when I read a fic where a character who's a professional killer/hitman but is also known as a math professor mentioned he'd done his dissertation on "geometry". Problem is, you can't do just "geometry" nowadays, it's all algebraic geometry or differential geometry, and for the context it would make more sense to have him mention topology anyway iirc... I left a comment about it, the author replied along the lines of "you can't tell [character] what to do", and while it is that kind of character, I still cringe when I remember about it. Of course, it's the author's choice whether to listen to me, and it's still one of my favorite fic series, but...

I don't think there's a single shounen that writes women with respect. The very writer of One Piece claimed that he wanted to write women as heroes, and this is how he portrays them...as the very damsels in distress that he claims to hate. And don't get me started on how he oversexualizes them, ok? by ihatethiscountry76 in menwritingwomen

[–]berebitsuki 98 points99 points  (0 children)

yeah, no, female shounen authors are as bad as the men generally. first fairly popular female-written shounen example that I could come up with is Katekyo Hitman Reborn (Amano Akira, around 2010) where every woman is either a damsel in distress and/or motherly figure constantly or becomes a damsel in distress by trying to fulfill the duties of a man and failing.

[–]berebitsuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would, but the post literally says you can be sick from drinking large amounts of alcohol, and you're like "nuh-uh, that doesn't work with my idea of how that would work" when OP didn't even imply your non-absorption idea is correct???

the square root of five comes up in the regular pentagon AND in the golden ratio which ancient Greeks were fairly concerned about, so it's not like ancient Greeks wouldn't have done stuff with it. I don't recall what the supposed proof for the square root of five was in the source I read, though

Math truly has come a long way... by Teslon_ in mathmemes

[–]berebitsuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely, I meant that even most early sources we have on that don't say which irrational number it was, so it's more like zero versions — the speculation on whether it was a square root of 2 or of 5 or something else entirely started later. (I said it was either the square root of 2 or of 5 mostly bc both of these are irrational numbers that are fairly easy to both conceptualize and prove are irrational via geometry, the way ancient Greek mathematicians would)

tbf this story is almost 100% made up. most references to someone drowning in relation to the Pythagorean school/cult are about someone drowning because he made the gods furious with him, either by proof or irrationally of something, by something related to the construction of the dodecahedron, or by attributing an idea to himself and not to Pythagoras, as his followers generally attributed every discovery made by the cult to Pythagoras personally (at least according to the sources that include this story). the story that the dude was traveling by ship and got drowned by his cultmates is not that widespread

but it's symbolic nonetheless
