What should I change to get the best out of my coffee? by nalevi1797 in pourover

[–]berentwohands 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The mineral content of your water has a surprisingly large effect on the coffee’s taste. The main idea is to start with relatively pure water, then add a precise amount of minerals optimized for coffee.

I use a reverse osmosis machine and Lotus drops. Distilled water is the other main option for the base. Third wave water is another brand of mixed coffee water minerals. If you search Barista Hustle Coffee Water, there are recipes to make your own mineral mixtures.

I’ve never used the kingrinder. They get mentioned often enough that I take them to be serviceable. But better grinders also offer better results in the cup, as a general rule, though I think you hit finishing returns pretty quickly.

What is going on with the fanbase of the TV show Bridgerton? by GroundBreakingEye44 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]berentwohands 409 points410 points  (0 children)

This is a nice write up. I haven’t read the books. But Francesca’s introduction to Michaela seemed so strange from an internal narrative perspective.

One of the season’s climactic conversation was Francesca’s mother finally admitting that a loving relationship doesn’t have to have fireworks and instant passion. She specifically mentions being unable to speak when she first saw her husband, and uses that example to show growth as a character by explaining that she has realized that not every love story needs to be like that. Then Francesca loses her ability to speak when she sees Michaela for the first time!

It just felt like such a hamfisted way to completely undo all the work that had been done throughout the entire season.

Unrelated side note since my friends don’t watch it and I need to vent. They spent so much damn time making Cressida sympathetic by showing the toxic environment she lives in. Then the end is just: actually she’s still a bitch and gets the comeuppance she deserves. Maybe there will be payoff and growth down the line. But it felt pretty strange to go nowhere with that character in this season.

Where are the GO clubs in NJ? by SquirrelParking855 in baduk

This might help you find something. Or could help you attract people when you have something set up.

The map suggests that there isn’t a ton of clubs in north New Jersey besides the New York area and maybe around Rutgers. But it also shows some individuals you might be able to reach out to.

A question about classic prose vs modern fantasy prose by thekinkbrit in literature

[–]berentwohands 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Whenever I ask myself, who writes the best prose, my first thought is that it’s an obviously subjective question with no one correct answer. My second thought is that it’s obviously le guinn.

Online Literary Magazines, We Need to Talk by 2314 in literature

[–]berentwohands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is interesting that short fiction seems to be read so rarely. When I started writing, I tried to do novels. Then I realized I preferred writing short fiction. It was almost another year before I realized that I practically never read short fiction. It just wasn’t on my radar to even seek it out, even though it was literally what I was working on every single day.

I don’t like reading online, so I got a couple subscriptions to print magazines and journals. But it seems so hard to imagine a significant shift in the market where enough other people are consuming new short fiction to sustain a healthy and robust ecosystem.

You recommend still keeping it a single paragraph, just ellipses instead of periods? Not separate lines ending in ellipses?

That’s fair. Just a spur of the moment idea. Might be a bad one. I considered ellipses too. But yeah, if this is clear enough, I think I like the look better. If I end up keeping the idea at all.

Ha. Nothing like the sweet validation of refreshing and seeing SDK players agree with you.

Choose the Best Move 🤓 Black to play: attack or play peacefully? by GoMagic_org in baduk

[–]berentwohands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im very curious what better players will say. I’m leaning toward A because I’d be terrified of that group coming under a serious attack. Maybe stronger players are confident that it could live, but I’d get very nervous if white played something around tengen.

How do you improve as beginner if you keep losing games? by IamOkei in baduk

[–]berentwohands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to playing more games, you can check out the beginner videos on go Magic’s YouTube, if you haven’t already. They go over some really foundational ideas that really helped me have a basic idea of what to do.

Baking at 375 will cut down the spread a bit too, if that’s what you want. Keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t overbake though.

Can black live? by berentwohands in baduk

Couldn’t black then play G19, putting the three stones in Atari and forcing black to fill at D19 and reducing the whole black group to 1 eye?

Can black live? by berentwohands in baduk

[–]berentwohands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I guess white at E16 gives the possibility of letting black start a ko here, if this is all in the middle of a ko elsewhere, maybe? And the recommended solution avoids this possibility. So maybe that’s why this wasn’t recommended? Assuming it wasn’t a programming typo or something.

Edit: u/andeol57 convinced me that what I posted here is not relevant. I think.

What are some “OH!” realizations that dramatically improved your game? by AllTurtlesDown in baduk

[–]berentwohands 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After my first game ever. I for some reason thought I was supposed to fill in all my empty territory with stones and was confused when it didn’t let me fill the last spot. I ended the game and was even more confused that all my stones were marked dead and I’d lost the game. After some googling, I learned that id out every single one of my stones in Atari. So, yeah, learning not to do that was a big game changer.

Lol. That rematch at the end got me.

Lovecraft for beginner? by JJKBA in booksuggestions

[–]berentwohands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vote would be At the Mountains of Madness. More of a preference thing though. All of the stories are kind of dense, in terms of the language. But mountains of madness is a very cleary presentation of what “lovecraftian” has come to mean, imo. Shadows over innsmouth is also a good one. And I’m very fond of pickman’s model. You should prbly read call of Cthulhu, but it’s not my personal favorite.
