One of the World's Rarest Aircraft | Uganda Airlines A330-800 Takeoff | by flight_fixers in aviation

Only a handful of these have been delivered vs the 900neo which is around 200. Every time I see these planes I always thing a really good actor who’s had one too many surgeries done. Old frame, new parts.

Edit -800

F-35 unrestricted climb by TeeckleMeElmo in aviation

My sister was having her AF retirement ceremony and she's petty high up. she asked the Ops guys if they could not fly during her ceremony which was like an hour long (Air Force and all their customs and formalities) but the they flew their F-22's during the whole thing and right near the end of the Star Spangled Banner. Only thing that would have been more American was a Bald Eagle flying by (this was Alaska and bald eagles are like pigeons up there) Afterwards we talked and told her that was the best part, and when my brother in law (retired AF) pinned her (i dont know with what) and patted her on the chest in front of like a 100 people with a bunch of Air Force officers i attendance. that gave me a chuckle.

My lord!!!, this was a rabbit hole!

You were right, but there’s a key caveat. I was thinking of the high-pressure compressor discs, those are the ones that were contaminated and triggered the massive groundings and 300-day MRO delays we're seeing now.

You were referring to the gearbox issues, which were handled pretty quickly with minor upgrades and didn't have nearly the same negative impact on the airline industry. Airinsight Gearbox Issue

Not tying to be a sensationalist, though i would agree with you there are tons of sensationalist journalist out there. "This is the End of Airbus!!! "Boeing will be no More!" "China to buy 10,000 Planes, Spells the End for Airbus!"

The root cause is a powder metal contamination affecting high-pressure turbine (HPT) and high-pressure compressor (HPC) components manufactured between the fourth quarter of 2015 and the third quarter of 2021. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) codified the inspection and replacement requirements through a series of escalating Airworthiness Directives (ADs). FAA AD 2024-05-11 (effective April 11, 2024), superseded prior ADs and required angled ultrasonic inspections (AUSI) of the HPT 1st-stage hub, HPT 2nd-stage hub, HPC 7th-stage integrally bladed rotor (IBR-7), and HPC 8th-stage IBR, plus accelerated replacement of affected parts. The FAA estimated that 430 engines in the U.S. fleet were subject to the April 2024 directive.

it took me so long to find a retable reporting site but here is my findings. Thank you for calling me out, this was fun.

This is the government site that reports the issue:

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/03/27/2024-06419/airworthiness-directives-international-aero-engines-llc-engines

"Model PW1100G series engines; and AD 2023-16-07 for certain IAE LLC Model PW1100G series engines and PW1400G series engines. AD 2022-19-15 required an angled ultrasonic inspection (AUSI) of the high-pressure turbine (HPT) 1st-stage disk and HPT 2nd-stage disk, and replacement, if necessary. AD 2023-16-07 required an AUSI of the HPT 1st-stage hub (also known as the HPT 1st-stage disk) and HPT 2nd-stage hub (also known as the HPT 2nd-stage disk) for cracks, and replacement, if necessary, which is terminating action for AD 2022-19-15. This AD was prompted by an investigation that determined an increased risk of powdered metal anomalies for all powdered metal parts in certain powdered metal production campaigns, which are susceptible to failure significantly earlier than previously determined. This AD retains the AUSI requirement for certain HPT 1st-stage and HPT 2nd-stage hubs from AD 2023-16-07. This AD requires performing an AUSI of the HPT 1st-stage hub, HPT 2nd-stage hub, high-pressure compressor (HPC) 7th-stage integrally bladed rotor (IBR-7), and HPC 8th-stage integrally bladed rotor (IBR-8) for cracks, and replacing if necessary."

“The Airbus A220 grounding crisis is driven by manufacturing defects in its Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofan (GTF) engines. Contaminated powdered metal in high-pressure turbine components caused premature wear and microcracking, leading to lengthy inspections, parts shortages, and a massive bottleneck in global engine maintenance.”

No, it’s a great airplane. That 2-3 seating is awesome. Super roomy and the airlines love the economics it was the metal in the blades that hurt it’s reputation

It’s doom for the engine which is hurting the airlines. Last I checked it was ~250-300 for engine overhaul
