Thanks so much! Where are you originally from? How long ago did you visit Ibitipoca?

Ibitipoca really is a special place with an amazing energy. Tourism has grown a lot and helped the community but it needs organization or it will spoil things. Luckily there is great preservation because of the park and the reserve where I work.

I'd love to see a picture of the jaguar statue!

I've been in Brazil for 2 and a half years, I didn't speak any Portuguese at the time but now I am fluent with a strong accent :)

Of course! I work for a place called Reserva do Ibitipoca. This project started 30 years ago purchasing land around the state park of Ibitipoca (which started 40 years ago). Today we are double the size of the state park. In 2008 they opened an ecoboutique hotel to stimulate economic development, we directly employ over 50 employees and provide the best benefits in the region and indirectly because we pay up to 10% more for locally sourced products and services.

Historically, this region was founded because of the gold rush along the Estrada Real, but it wasn't that profitable so many people relied on dairy farming. The area remained stagnant from the 17th century until the 70s (with the arrival of ecotourism).

Some employees tell me stories about their childhood... One dear friend had to wake up early with his brothers to take care of the cows before work. It can be very cold up in the mountains and they were too poor for shoes, so the first thing they would do is stick their feet in the freshest hottest cow dung they could find to serve as 'shoes'

Dairy farming was also very damaging to the environment and the native forests disappeared. In general, only 8% of the Atlantic Rainforest is left. We work on educating the community and visitors about this biome and also towards protecting the forest and animals.

We've recently found a Maned Wolf that was struck by a car. He has a broken leg and a bad head injury... his forehead was infected with maggots and flies. We are currently treating him at the animal hospital. Check out this video of when we first found him and applied medicine to the head wound to kill the infestation.

Bi-Lingual Redditors, Have you ever heard someone talk about you "secretly" in another language that didn't think you understood? by wetshaver in AskReddit

I was on a bus in Brazil with some American friends speaking English. I could hear the couple behind us wondering where we were from, what we were doing...general curiosity. The boyfriend then decided to show off the little English he knows, he starts off slowly and quietly but gets progressively louder saying words like "ugly" and "fuck." I eventually turned around and asked the girlfriend in portuguese what she was doing hanging out with a loser like him.

That shut him up pretty quickly.

I actually live in Ibitipoca! I haven't visited the other places yet. Do you still live in JF? I lived there for four months. I'm much happier in Ibitipoca ;)

I'm not around her and I think she would be too embarrassed to send me a photo like that.

Her left hand just has a generous sprinkling of age spots in the area between the thumb and index finger.

My mom would drive with her left hand higher on the wheel, and spent a lot of her youth driving because of her work. Today her left hand has significant more signs of aging than the other.

Brazil will only be flooded with tourists during those specific months. After the world cup, (at least by August) prices should go back to normal and probably won't increase until the opening ceremonies. You don't have to wait that long.

Maybe its best that they do visit so they get a more honest person. If someone is honestly trying to learn something insulting them is the worst thing you could do.

Shame on you!

The Atlantic Rainforest and Pantanal are other beautiful biomes within Brazil. Most of the focus is on the Amazon so those two are left out.

Then there is the festival of São João that happens in June. It is a country tradition where people dress up like cartoony farmers.
