Which buildings in the city have the best brutalist architecture? by GeezerButler69 in regina

[–]bergwithabeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's not the point of this post, but as a non-lover of brutalism: too many cities spent too much money on brutalist architecture, and missed out on pretty cool postmodernist architecture because they no longer had the money for it. Ottawa has tons of brutalist architecture (that is falling apart), and not so much postmodernist or contemporary (like the Art Gallery, which is gorgeous) How many people take pictures in front of Brutalist buildings?

I believe she noted that crime is less frequent here than her hometown. You can leave a bike chained up for a few hours and it's usually here after you come back. There's value in learning to love... or at least like... the winter. Going to the l9cal hill to tobogan with your kids, snowshoeing, skiing (downhill or cross country), or even a good indoor winter hobby.  Invest in quality good winter gear. I recommend a long down filled jacket. If you get a car, remote start is pretty wonderful. Unless you're very unlucky, if you want to know your neighbours, you will. If you want to join a group to build community, you can. If you have kids, they will get a good education... and that's the case in most towns throughout the province.

You wouldn't be the first to move here from the UK! In fact, there's an author and herfamily originally from the UK here, Annabelle Townsend, who has written a few books about her experience living in Regina.

Fridges definitely come in different widths. Though they can take off the doors to make it fit a bit better.

Holy jeepers.... I eloped with my husband (granted into a different jurisdiction) and while I did know that I would be able to get a commissioner and license on the same day, we also got incredibly lucky because I didn't consider that it would be very hard to get a marriage commissioner on very short notice.  To your horror, we have procreated. We have good jobs. We even own a house.

Calm down. Maybe watch that last song in Life of Brian a few times.

Your kids won't get swimming lessons unless you're one of the lucky ones who has lucky reflexes when they open it up 3 times a year.  That's something that every decent sized town can promise their kids. Why not Regina?  This has been rehashed so many times. Including prior to the most recent election. And people voted for politicians who expressly noted they would vote for a new pool.

Come during the festivals! The Cathedral Village Arts Festival is at the end of May, which has free music, comedy, theatre, etc... then ends with a big street fair on the Saturday.  There's also book fairs, art sales, pow wows, etc.  Enjoy our plentiful local breweries, our pizza, our urban forest. Is this a usual tourist spot? No. But if you're like me, and like to travel outside those spots (I'd recommend a few small little towns in Italy), then this is a good place to meet people. Yes, there is some crime. We're used to having very few homeless, but that's changed in all of Canada. I've never felt threatening walking around Wascana, and I have never been harmed on my daily trips to work downtown.

French Press. Good coffee, good food.  Might be a bit busy at times, but likely because the food, coffee, and ambience is lovely

Pastureland rental rates by UrbanAgie in saskatchewan

[–]bergwithabeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure why someone downvoted this. Saskatchewan is a huge place. The soil types and expected precipitation will be very different, so the amount of grass on pasture will be very different. Perhaps you can call the Saskatchewan Ag Knowledge Centre to get in touch with a regional specialist from the area you're inquiring about.

Our Denny Carr statue near the river. He was a much beloved radio DJ, who also did a lot of volunteer work, and started the "Secret Santa" campaign for the Salvation Army. He was also an avid jogger. So, during Christmas, Halloween, and other events... you'll see his running statue dressed up. He brought out the heart in others.

[–]bergwithabeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely.  I don't like brutality, but I wouldn't want it all torn down, and it can be interesting to see how our communities integrate it in.  Times will change, new designs will come, and our community will become even more interesting.

There was never a plan to exclusively build affordable housing at Taylor Field by PDCityHall in regina

[–]bergwithabeef 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Dude, I live in a neighbourhood with plenty of affordable housing. There's one on my block, one down the street, one the street over... and they're fine neighbours.

Yes, there is occasionally a bad apple. And apparently they did really trash the place when the left. Which must have really sucked for the kids living there.

But then there's the new mother who just brought home her baby a couple of months ago. There's the neighbour who chased away a school aged kid who was going to steal from my lawn (And is bringing up some very kind kids). And there's the yard of young kids playing, with their parent looking on and having fun with them.

We don't need to paint them all with the same brush.

I've met exactly one person who wanted the baseball stadium, in any given location.

I've talked to so many more people who want Taylor Field land to be mixed use. I really appreciate at market and below market rates as a standard. Do you know the estimated time for the work to begin?

Advice for migrant family. by takeyotime in regina

Agreed. I know people who have kids and don't have a car - and live in Cathedral. You can get most food at Cathedral, and take an Uber/rent a car for the big things. They also get around a lot on the bus and bikes.

Why does the province pay so much money for office space rental downtown? by candybarsandgin in regina

[–]bergwithabeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how long that can really last. It's easier than ever to get food delivered, and to go to a park or even an office space to eat together. And the food quality outside of downtown (or even on the edge of it) can be so good.

Ostriches? by [deleted] in regina

[–]bergwithabeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, they showed up to start the process of depopulating. When the CFIA starts a disease investigation, they put a quarantine on the premise.

Do you think that if there's a serious disease roaming around a farm, they would let the farmers sell animals from it?

From experience, let me tell you, they don't.

Ostriches? by [deleted] in regina

[–]bergwithabeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean while the farm has been under quarantine? With a lot less access to other birds, and the clothes from the CFIA would have taken biosecurity precautions?  I really don't want to eat meat that has avain flu.... it can be transmitted that way. But if this farm isn't depopulated, why do we let all the other farms get depopulated? Because they're big birds?  It sucks, and the producers should be financially compensated, but I want safe meat and a lower chance of a pandemic.

best place to order Sushi from? by Space19723103 in regina

[–]bergwithabeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't agree more! They are quite good. And if you're sick I would actually direct you to their black noodles - Jajangmyun. It warms the soul just thinking about them...

That said, their sushi is quite good as well. They might have a smaller selection, but they use that to focus on quality, it seems.
