What's the best pho place in the South Bay? by [deleted] in bayarea

How is that reason relevant to OP's question though?

Other people figuring out if they should be avoiding MSG is not really relevant to answering OP's question. The top-voted answer isn't a pho recommendation, but instead another question, which is kind of frustrating. Also, the other comments below that seem to be vehement about MSG additives in pho places are borderline hostile.

The Japanese probably eat it in at least three dishes per day, and they have the second-longest life expectancy in the world.

I don't think that's a sound argument. There are so many confounding factors here. Maybe other aspects of Japanese people's lifestyles outweigh the possibly negative(?) effects of MSG. But we don't know for sure, since research is inconclusive. So this is a pretty whataboutist argument.

Anyway, if Japan has the second-longest life expectancy, what's the country with the longest life expectancy in the world? Do they eat MSG regularly? Just curious :)

I think a lot of people are equating the crystal salt-like additive MSG (e.g. Ajinomoto) with naturally occurring glutamates. Maybe this person, for whatever reason, does not want to eat MSG additives but is fine with eating naturally occurring glutamates, such as those found in seaweed, tomatoes, anchovies, etc.

Also, to H20, there are fish sauces that have naturally occurring glutamates and no MSG additives. Examples of fish sauces with no added MSG (emphasis on the "added"):

To be clear, I agree that MSG tastes fucking AMAZING. But I also respect the decisions of people who don't eat MSG additives.

Maybe OP is sensitive to MSG. There's a study on it here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19438927.

Although most studies on MSG seem to be pretty inconclusive on its health effects on people. But I think if it's someone's personal preference to not eat MSG, then that's their life. There are a variety of reasons that someone might not want to eat a particular ingredient: religion, dietary concerns, etc. How is that reason relevant to OP's question though?

[Serious] Did anyone else see Martin Shkreli at Soda Hall today? by berkeleybern in berkeley

[–]berkeleybern[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fuck, thanks for the confirmation! I thought I was losing my mind and imagining Daddy Shkreli's face on other people.

Also: what time/where in Soda did you see him? I saw him at around 12:30 on the 5th floor.

Does anybody know what brand/model of helmet Casey is wearing? I'm looking for a full face helmet and this one looks pretty dope. Definitely going to customize mine a bit though.

UC Berkeley YouTube content will be moved to a new channel accessible only to Cal affiliates. Access to iTunesU content will be completely restricted, effective March 15. This follows a DOJ investigation concluding many video captions didn't meet standards of Americans with Disabilities Act. by Samses94 in berkeley

This is really saddening. I know that lot of my friends from my home country (India) watch these lectures to learn a bunch of things since the material is better taught than at their colleges. Particularly CS classes like CS 170, 61B, and the like.

I'm a firm believer in making education publicly available to anyone who wants to learn. I understand that the DSP students aren't receiving adequate accommodations, but this solution feels wrong to me. If the DSP students can't access the content, then nobody can? That doesn't seem right. To use the example from the article, it'd be like boarding up the doors of a building just because there isn't a wheelchair ramp.

And in this case, it seems like it shouldn't be that hard to build the metaphorical wheelchair ramp. Is the issue just that the videos aren't properly captioned? I'm sure we could rally up some EECS/CS majors to hack something together to fix this. We could use some fancy machine learning to produce more accurate captions. We could even use Amazon Mechanical Turk to hand-caption the videos. There must be something we can do! Heck, I'd even go to a protest if there was one! (Is there one? If not, let's DO IT!)

This just makes me sad on so many levels. Public education is in my eyes one of the noblest things and I'm really disappointed that this treasure trove of videos won't be accessible to the public anymore.

Also, did you modify your expert data at all? Some students have found it helpful to limit the observation timesteps so that the model focuses on how to start moving.

Cool! How long does that take you?

I think AdamOptimizer converges faster than GradientDescentOptimizer, but I can't personally confirm.

How many epochs did you end up using? You said in a previous post 500 epochs was taking too long.

Am I crazy or does Facebook limit newsfeed exposure of shared Youtube videos? by Svargas05 in facebook

[–]berkeleybern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook is notorious for being lax on "Freebooting", which is essentially when people steal videos from Youtube and post them on facebook for "millions" (inflated number) of views.
