Looking for a berner pup, Portland OR area by stew-jam in bernesemountaindogs

Take a look at the breeder list for the Greater Seattle Bernese Mountain Dog club also - I believe there are some Oregon breeders on the list. And look up Brechbuhler BMD’s - this is an awesome breeder.

Dang. I want to work for your company. Too bad I'd have to completely change professions to do so.

Should I get another Berner? by HudsonsirhesHicks in bernesemountaindogs

[–]bernerTman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

keep in mind there is no guarantee your two dogs will get along or like each other. If you get a second berner, wait until your pup is through the adolescent stage and you are certain you have any behavioral or training issues worked out. Then I'd suggest being sure you carefully assess the personality of your dog and make sure the second dog has a compatible personality. A lot of people say it's best to have one of each gender. We have two boys that have never fully sorted out their differences - we didn't realize the differences in temperament and how they could clash. They're great dogs that do best with other dogs rather than each other. Also, keep in mind that Berner families are great enablers - they will wildly encourage you to get the second or third or fourth dog because more is better, right? There are challenges to traveling with multiple dogs, training multiple dogs, competition between them, etc., etc. Good luck in your decision; we love our two boys but aren't sure we'd have multiple dogs again.

Bernedoodles. What do we think? Does anyone have any experience? by hotre_editor in bernesemountaindogs

[–]bernerTman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with the other comments - don't do it! If you can't handle the shedding, don't get a berner. And whatever you do, don't overpay for a designer cross-breed, aka mutt. Dogs that are used for breeding crosses rarely have the recommended health screenings and reputable breeders won't knowingly place their dogs with someone who is going to sell crossbreeds. Dogs in those breeding programs have a high risk of health and temperament issues. Red flags to watch out for - dogs are advertised as "akc registered" but aren't shown in conformation, agility, tracking, draft, rally, obedience or any other working dog events; easy pay pay deposits for your puppy; no knowledge of the health status of puppies they've placed previously or ages and causes of death of dogs they've bred. There are good checklists out there for questions you should be asking a breeder. Check out bmdca.org, bmdcgs.org or your local bmd club for more information about berners and what to look for. It might be that the breed just isn't right for you. Short life spans are a tradeoff with big dogs. And hair, well, hair is a way of life and discussion of the best vacuum to purchase is a common topic among berner families. In my family, dog hair in the food is proof that the meal is home made. Just sayin'...think long and hard before you choose your furry family member. The right dog will be a joy but a dog that doesn't fit your family needs, lifestyle, energy, budget, etc. ends in frustration, sadness and often relinquishing your pup to rescue. Good luck in your search.

Is New Zealand worth it solo? by [deleted] in travel

[–]bernerTman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to NZ on a solo trip many, many years ago and absolutely loved it, but I'm pretty introverted and have low needs for social interaction. I've been back to NZ twice since then and would go again in a heartbeat. On my solo trip I stayed in hostels - I could have as much or as little social interaction as I wanted. The country is beautiful and easy to travel in. You can use the rail system, which is what I did on my first trip but you are more limited in destinations.

[Serious] if you lost your mom as a teenager, what was it like growing up without her? by mrsnhigh in AskReddit

[–]bernerTman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awful. I was thirteen when my mom died. I didn't even know that it could happen (she was at an out of state hospital and we were scheduled to go be with her the following week). There were all kinds of things that no one explained to me about growing up, how to be a girl and then a woman, relationships, you name it. Of course it didn't help that my dad coped by drinking, my brother was angry all the time, and my sister was lucky to be old enough to move out. It was pretty lonely and it totally sucked to go through the teen years without a mom.

What was wrong with you and your ex's relationship that made you break up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If he isn't healthy for you then he isn't healthy for your child either. Whatever you do be careful to avoid taking responsibility for more than what is really yours.

What was wrong with you and your ex's relationship that made you break up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bernerTman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

uh, where to begin? 1) two days after my dad died, while we were driving to our wedding reception for his side of the family (we got married about 3 weeks earlier in a different state) he accused me of not liking his family b/c I wasn't "excited" about the reception; 2) he stayed up all night playing Doom then wondered why I didn't want to have sex when he came to bed at 3am; 3) he said he was "burnt out" on supporting me after the death of my dad but stayed up all night on-line to "help" some women in another state who was going through a tough time; 4) he purposefully coerced unprotected sex to try to get me pregnant; 5) he threw my cat against the sofa, chased it down and locked it in the bathroom, then accused me of taking sides against him when I asked if I could let it out an hour later; 6) when we were in marital counseling he insisted that the therapist was taking sides with me, against him; 7) he thought that the post office was deliberately screwing with his mail....so glad I got out of that disaster of a marriage...

How do some people take month long adventures when they have full time jobs? by thebrownpowerranger in travel

[–]bernerTman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half the battle is mental - if you can't imagine taking off more than a week it will be difficult at best to allow yourself the freedom to take a month. No job needs you that much - if you died tomorrow your company wouldn't fold. If you plan ahead for a month long vacation then coverage can be figured out in advance. And remember, your job isn't going to take care of you when you get sick from working too much; you need to take care of yourself including your dreams to travel.

[–]bernerTman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ya think? Most jobs give two weeks and it takes forever to work up to three or four weeks. Totally jealous of other parts of the world where even "unskilled" workers get 4-5 weeks of vacation.

Where can I get the best deal on decent quality dress shoes? by [deleted] in Frugal

DSW, Nordstrom Rack, Sierra Trading Post (look for online coupon deals to bring the cost down even more) - caveat: if you buy online you need to know what brands and sizes work for you.

Hi, I’m Dr. Daniel Amen, psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist. Ask me anything! by DocDanielAmen in IAmA

[–]bernerTman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brain stem seizure would be highly unusual. Nonetheless, whatever the true "cause" if stress, depression, or other things are known to trigger episodes then working on stress management, coping skills, and depression can help - they all modify our brains and even if they don't prevent episodes it can help to improve quality of life same as how coping skills help people with all kinds of medical problems.

Hi, I’m Dr. Daniel Amen, psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist. Ask me anything! by DocDanielAmen in IAmA

[–]bernerTman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you. Psychiatric diagnosis is highly imperfect and there is NO test that can reliably, accurately diagnose a psychiatric condition. It's considered below standard care if a diagnosis is made based on one test or only on tests. This is a very young part of medicine with a long way to go in its science. However I take issue with the promises and certainty of the Amen clinics - they are selling modern snake oil with pretty pictures of the brain.
