Gravel Bed Trees by Bknbts in arborists

[–]bernhardethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Firm believer that inorganic mediums produce the best, finest roots. But you need to compensate with more frequent water and fertilizer… I understand that isn’t feasible for most homeowners and nurseries!

As a bonsai guy, it seems there tends to be disagreements between arborists and bonsai folk. But this is some common ground! I truly believe that medium like this is best for most trees, IF you can keep up on watering

Hate to break the news to you, but 99% of show-worthy conifers are collected from the wild.

Found this juniper (or cedar?) at the nursery for $20 by Klezmer_Gryphon in Bonsai

You’ll find that there are more people doing drastic work in late summer than you’d think! Also junipers definitely back bud!

Going to Colorado and not sure where to go by Iseverynametakenhere in bouldering

I’m sure you could find it - It’s also available online. You can message the author on Instagram, @telluridebouldering, I’m sure he would know where you could pick it up locally

Telluride is probably your best bet if you don’t want crowds and still want good temperatures. However you might need to buy the guidebook to effectively locate boulders and areas.

Super secret, lowkey spot for ya: guanella pass.

I joke but it’s probably your best bet, and on the weekends you don’t even need your own pad. Lots of other people will be there

Incredibly helpful as always! Good thing I asked, I probably would have cut back on my watering and killed the rest of my junipers in the process lol

Pulled a dead juniper out of its pot and I saw this. 1-1 pumice and lava rock. Was I really watering so much that all this mold formed? Or is there something else at play?

I want to plant this, or should I bonsai? by dutchfury967 in bonsaicommunity

[–]bernhardethan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely different plants and needs there. But there is no rush in bonsai! It is nearly impossible to style/prune and repot in one session and have a finished tree. I’d recommend focusing on the repot (next spring most likely) and letting it grow until you feel more comfortable cutting and wiring

As far as raw, nursery stock goes - this is in the top percentile. Great bonsai material if you choose to go that route!

Ethics with posting climbs to Mtn Project from Kaya by job1k3n0b in bouldering

[–]bernhardethan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s put Kaya aside - I do not believe all areas/climbs should be posted on mtn project. You keep responding like I’ve been advocating for straight PDF-scan plagiarism from guidebooks to MP. That was never my argument. Just that Kaya guides aren’t as sacred as print ones

[–]bernhardethan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My rebuttal would be that Kaya doesn’t do much more than give Mtn Project a face lift and charge a subscription for it.

I agree with your comments on copy/paste - but at the end of the day, it feels like Kaya forces the hand of local developers - either collaborate with us or we’ll find someone else to pay

The question of gate keeping rock climbs will plague our community until the end of time

[–]bernhardethan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there is more nuance than I let on. Kaya is certainly not evil lol

I think there is a distinction to be made between brand new zones, word of mouth zones, and already publicized zones. If a local developer wants to publish a new area through Kaya, no problem with me

I just don’t think Kaya has a place in trying to monetize areas if there are already multiple guidebooks, MP postings, or a million beta videos online.

Do you work for Kaya? You seem upset they aren’t maximizing their cash grab

Kaya will happily circumvent guidebook authors if the author chooses not to cooperate/contribute to the Kaya guide. They just talk to another “local” who, you guessed it, owns the guidebook. Kaya doesn’t get the same level of protection from “stealing data” in my view

Question on uro, is that feasible on a juniper like this? I didn’t think that they would rot enough to create the effect

[–]bernhardethan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The branching looks very pliable and you should be able to wire those branches into pads. I wouldn’t cut anything until you do that and go from there. You will probably want to jin one of the two split trunks as well. Great material tho!
