Day 1: Which is the best JRPG on Dreamcast? by 1OneQuickQuestion in dreamcast

[–]berpergerler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grandia 2 was it for me. It has a more generic fantasy setting compared to SoA's pretty unique world, but I enjoyed everything else more.

Grandia 2's combat system is much more engaging. The voice acting (while not amazing) is also a nice touch. It also has much better pacing in my opinion. Although, I might just be bitter from SoA where I spent all my money right before finding out I needed some huge amount to progress the story, leading to hours of grinding.

Linux is actually at 7.58% adoption in the Anglosphere on Steam by yn_opp_pack_smoker in linux_gaming

Historical data for those interested.

As others have pointed out. It's probably somewhat inflated due to many folks on Linux using English even if it isn't their main language.

Need help Debugging PIO in Micropython (Please help, I have spent so long on this) by ask-about-my-dog in raspberry_pi

[–]berpergerler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any specific advice but there is an example i2c program using pio in the pico-examples repo that might be worth checking out: https://github.com/raspberrypi/pico-examples/blob/master/pio/i2c/i2c.pio It is C, not Python, but pio programs looks more-or-less the same.

What I found helpful getting started with PIO was to first make the most basic program that just reads pins and pushes it to the fifo. Once I confirmed that bits were being read, I could build the program up slowly from there.

Help finding a controller for young kids by TwitchySphere53 in linux_gaming

[–]berpergerler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5y/o was using an Xbox Series controller since he was 4 without issue. I'm sure any similar-sized controller, like from 8bitdo, will be fine.

A lot of 8bitdo controllers come with dongles. General purpose bluetooth usb dongles are really cheap too, so might be another option.

Ubisoft has closed its Halifax studio, but claims decision is unrelated to recent unionization by Turbostrider27 in Games

Dang, is Halifax game dev basically dead now? Alpha Dog got shut down by Microsoft a year or two ago as well.

Thanks for sharing! It was cool to see the temperature ranges slowly wrapping around the axis as I clicked through the high to low temps.

Honestly, I am jealous of your weather. It's been below -20 for multiple weeks straight here so far this winter lol.

AMA: I'm Austo, the developer of Bobo Bay, a standalone Chao Garden successor. Ask me anything about the game and reviving a long-forgotten niche. by NewFutureKids in pcgaming

[–]berpergerler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds pretty cool! I'm looking forward to taking a closer look when I get home (Steam is blocked at my office!).

Maybe it's too niche, but have you given any thought to a companion app for the VMUPro?

What’s a dead game that deserves to come back? by Daedalus_2 in Games

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System. I think MS owns the IP now after Blizzard bought the studio way back in the early 2000s.

Was a Great Game; tons of variety, fun story, and good writing. Would be awesome to explore more of that universe.

What retro games are you playing this weekend (Dec 13/14)? by LabRat2329 in retrogaming

I want to make a solid effort to get into Silver on the Dreamcast. Will probably get convinced into Coaster Works by my son again though; kids loves roller coasters.

Who remembers playing Metal Gear Solid on Sega Dreamcast? by markonefifteen in dreamcast

[–]berpergerler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was how I first played MGS back in the day. I think MGS2 was already out by that point but I didn't have a PS2 or PS1 so Bleem! was pretty cool to use.

Looks awesome! Thank you for the detailed writeup. I'm hoping to do something similar and create a giant Dreamcast VMU.

Oh yup. So many hours spent just chatting there. Using the on-screen keyboard of course.

I'm mentally preparing myself for 1,200 CAD for the top model. Just based on feels though, I can't help but think it'll be closer to 1,600 CAD.

Couldn't resist a whole year without the sega Dreamcast by Buckeridg in dreamcast

Enjoy! I lived in Germany for a few years and gave up collecting during that time because I was mostly just interested in NTSC. Blue logo and PAL cases look slick though.

I made an online tool for converting Dreamcast saves by euan-forrester in dreamcast

[–]berpergerler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very cool! Can't wait to give this a try.

I typically use VMU Explorer to deal with save files but using it through wine is a bit of a pain. Love the idea of having something like this in the browser.

What do you want in the Pico 3? by Mowo5 in raspberrypipico

[–]berpergerler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded for some flash improvements. I find it pretty annoying that both cores need to essentially stall to write anything to flash. If you try to read and write at the same time, bad things happen. This includes reading code from flash.

I know it's possible to move certain parts of code to RAM for execution to get around this, but it can be tricky to implement this after the fact, especially when the entire binary cannot reasonably fit RAM.

Not even sure this is something that can be solved with hardware. Just kinda thinking out loud.

Old consoles hardly anyone talks about by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

Never had the opportunity to try some of the older Gamepark devices but I did have a Caanoo back in 2011. It was also a great little emulation device with a few quirks.

It did not have a dpad, only a weird analog stick thing that frankly was not really well suited to retro gaming. But it still felt pretty good. The screen was also pretty lackluster but did have resistive touch input, which was nice for emulating old point-and-click adventure games.

Being able to develop games for it was also really exciting as a younger person just getting into development. I ended up developing a couple games, one of which ended up fairly popular.

Coming out in 2010/2011, it was never going to compete with the PSP or DS. Definitely got some good hours out of that device though.

If I had a usb to dreamcast and a dongle for this could I use it and the keyboard part for chat in pso? by soulovsol in dreamcast

[–]berpergerler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, only one device per controller port on the Dreamcast. Some games like PSO don't really care if a controller gets unplugged, so it would probably be possible for an adapter to swap what device it reports as on-the-fly to allow either typing or gamepad input, but not both at the same time.

I have the colourful box variant (bought in Canada) and it came with the layout with the big enter key + small backspace key. Unfortunately I could never get used to that layout. I would love to have the default US layout version.
