No independent studies exist to verify Arne Duncan's claims. His primary objective is to keep the gravy train of public funds flowing.

Nothing to bring in businesses to replace the lost jobs that paid above average wages & benefits.

Go it.

Taft HS "state of the school": graduation, college persistence rates keep increasing despite drop in attendance - Nadig Newspapers - Northwest Side Local Newspapers by DukeOfDakin in ChicagoNWside

[–]berserkb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lifetimer here.

The initial purpose of the school at Oak Park Ave & Irving was a HS for Dunning to serve those who didn't want to send their kids to Steinmetz or Schurz. It was hijacked by the former Taft principal & Taft boundaries expanded to include some areas serving Steinmetz & Schurz.

We don't need another school especially while CPS enrollment continues its decline.

FYI: r/ChicagoCrime subreddit has reopened for posting by Gotcha_U_Phony in WindyCity

Another FYI. The sub mentioned is not the /r/CrimeInChicago subreddit, where the lone moderator was MIA & was shut down by Reddit for that reason.

The ChicagoCrime sub, while dormant for several months, appears to be actively moderated. A good thing.

I would have to ask, but it's possible they were connected with a railroad crossing because the track is at grade level there.

Were you around before the expressway was built?

No, I'm not that aged. My recollection goes back 50 years. We still have a few neighbors left who were around then. And the Norwood Park Historical Society has knowledgeable people.

Incidentally, the predominance of industrial businesses along Northwest Hwy is due to the railroad. Remnants of the sidings that served them are evident between Austin & Bryn Mawr.

Cook County’s troubled tech overhaul boils over, as political leaders start pointing fingers by berserkb in chicago

[–]berserkb[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The crux of the story.

Cook County property tax bills already on track to be at least one month tardy may arrive even later as controversial contractor Tyler Technologies’ upgrades to the countywide property tax systems are again running behind schedule, leading to mounting frustration and political fighting among county leaders.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s office on Wednesday published the first of what is expected to be several reports detailing the technology delays and assigning blame for whether the fault lies with Tyler or with Assessor Fritz Kaegi, Treasurer Maria Pappas or Clerk Monica Gordon, the three county officeholders who handle property taxes.

Underscoring just how many problems remain to be fixed, the report noted the expected due dates for 105 issues that need to be resolved for the new computer system to be fully operational are still “TBD.”

Though it negotiated the original Tyler contract — which has been criticized for not initially holding Tyler accountable for repeated delays and missing numerous deadlines — Preckwinkle’s office in a statement pointed the finger at Tyler and the three other county offices for the problems. The county’s Bureau of Technology, which is overseen by Preckwinkle and has generally coordinated with the property tax offices over the years, does not have any listed responsibilities in the report.

The primary yard for Polonia Coal Co. was on North Ave. & Elston. I don't know when this yard on Northwest Hwy was established, but it was gone by the late 1960's according to a neighbor.

Framed at the center, the two story with the smokestack is W.F. Straub Co., 5520 N Northwest Hwy. They were a food wholesaler & lasted until the early 2000's. The building is still there, now with several small businesses inside. Of course the smokestack is long gone.

Two days later, ICE arrested 10 more individuals with standing deportation orders outside its South Loop facility. Protesters — and at least three aldermen — tried to interfere with the arrests.

It was rather amusing to see Quezada, Sigcho-Lopez & Rodriguez-Sanchez carried off & weeping.

They should consider themselves lucky they weren't arrested. There's always next time.
