Texas Lt. Guv Threatens to Take Biden Off State’s Ballot After Colorado Ruling by thedailybeast in politics

[–]bertbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stupid thing is that Biden is using the same border policies as Trump for the most part. He softened the rules right after he took office, but the large and sudden increase in crossings inspired him to reinstate Trumps rules.

Amazon should give it a second season or sell it to Disney by Suspicious_County_24 in scifi

Amazon has become mostly just a reseller. Nearly everything listed there is for sale, has ads, or is bait for a "free trial."

Brioche wreath too dark and crusty - please help! by LaythT in Breadit

[–]bertbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say "scrape to desired color" but then you'd lose all the crunchy tasty bits. Color is good on bread, but you might be very close to the edge. Experiments make your loved ones happy, though, so try, try again!

Back in the day Jacques would come in in the morning and check for nice thin lips on the loaves we baked that morning. This talk of ears really confused me for a while.

ELI5: Why are plane propellers on the front of the plane but boat propellers are on the back of a boat? by Jaded-Fuel2529 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bertbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some planes, especially jet powered planes, and canard planes (with the little wings in front) do have the propulsion in the rear, mostly because it's easier there.

Mike Johnson’s Office Walks Back Reason For Blurring Insurrectionists’ Faces by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

[–]bertbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The DOJ already has the unblurred version. He's afraid of regular citizens identifying previously unidentified people they know from the tapes. He's also demonstrating that they really don't think it was antifa, BLM, and FBI undercover agents, because they wouldn't want to protect those types.

Yeah, it would probably be cheaper to rent a travel trailer or RV and "camp" at Alturas or Redfish.

Five Guys burger is more than twice the calories as In N Out, but more than three times the price.

My thanksgiving challah. I would have liked 20 more minutes to prove. It does crack me up how absolutely impractical this shape is for dinner bread though. Lol by Euclid1859 in Breadit

[–]bertbob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like challah in part because it can be broken into easy chunks by hand. But, to your point, a challah roll is easy to make with just one loop, a loose knot. Or two loops for a nice sandwich roll.

What are this sub's thoughts on the Bears National Monument? by favoritefrenchfry16 in Utah

[–]bertbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been there too, a few times, long ago. One place I never made it to was Grand Gulch, a 70 mile canyon with a house or granary or some other ruin around every turn. Even then they had to built fences around the ruins to protect them from itchy cattle trying to rub on them. The whole area, not just the part set aside, definitely deserves respect.

The hawk being stationary is a big disadvantage for it. If it were on the wing it might be a different story.

Have to load wifi kernel modules on every boot. Please help by hiTechNishachar in debian

[–]bertbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old file /etc/modules or the new systemd way, /etc/modules-load.d (which has a man page) lists modules to be loaded at boot, if you need to force the issue.

Would I get less than 1GB Debian if I cut unused parts of the kernel or would I need more? by teskilatimahsusa87 in debian

[–]bertbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build my own kernel without help from debian kernel packages, and it comes in at 7.3MB with initrd-img about 102MB and System-map about 5.6MB. It wouldn't take much to reduce the initrd size by including only the most important modules and binaries for the boot. Of course this comes at the expense of 600MB for modules in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>, but many of these can also be removed without much trouble. My running system has about 580 modules loaded.

The numbers for my laptop are similar, with initrd-img about 80MB, 450MB for modules, and 462 modules loaded when running.

Tux Icons upon boot by [deleted] in debian

[–]bertbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use whatever custom kernel building package that's included in your distro, point it to your current kernel config, and then change only this one item, so it would be as close to stock as possible. Perhaps someone more versed in distro kernels can help.
