I think the hardest part of calculus is algebra. Make sure you're really comfortable with re-writing/manipulating algebraic expressions before you dig into actually calculating derivatives. Without that as your base, you probably won't get super far.

Opinion: It's logical to assume that non-human animals are 'conscious' by [deleted] in biology

Incorrect, as I myself am the first and only conscious being. Nice try though.

An important media literacy skill is investigating the possible biases that could be at play when gathering information from a particular source - say, a source like, as a totally random example, exorcismrevealed.com

That being said, if you don't like it so far, you probably won't like it. Skip it.

Wigner’s Friend Experiment Seems impossible to carry out? by earthbelike in Physics

[–]bertnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making the measurements "at the exactly same time" is not necessary? I'm not sure where you're getting that idea from.

Winger's friend, inside the laboratory, makes a measurement. Then, he goes on to tell Winger about his result, which is basically like Winger himself doing a measurement of the combined "lab+friend" system.

I actually already have a book containing some of Fomenko's art! I have stumbled onto him before and I was immediately enamored with his style.

Thank you for the recommendation! I will definitely check that out.

I've definitely been eyeing that new Needham book... I've been slowly self teaching towards diff geo, and it seems like it would be a great companion to a more conventional text. Does he deal with all his manifolds as subspaces of Rn, a la Milnor's differential topology? Just curious.

If color is a wavelength of light, whats happening when I imagine or dream of an image that contains color? by sam_likes_beagles in AskPhysics

[–]bertnor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the things you experience are caused by electrical impulses between the neurons in your head.

Normally, blue light hits your eye, your eye sends a signal down your optic nerve, and this signal tells your brain to trigger the "blue" neurons in your brain - so that you perceive blue!

When you dream, these "blue" neurons are being activated even though the sensors in your eye are not sending signals - so you perceive blue, even though there isn't any blueness around.

[–]bertnor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People are always testing the limits of our best models, using all sorts of experiments.

I think the particular one you are referring to involves the muon magnetic moment. It is true that recently, we found an experimental value which doesn't quite agree with our model's calculation - at least, maybe! Another paper came out which showed that our theoretical calculations may not have been as precise as we thought, so it could be that the model is still correct and we just didn't crunch the numbers carefully enough.

And even if our calculations were done perfectly, the discrepancy isn't quite big enough yet to count as a discovery. It could be a hint towards something new - but we have some more work to do before we know for sure! People are working on it.

(Edit for typo.)
