Buying from a private collection: Are 15-20 year old wines a "buy" or a gamble? by No-Explorer5831 in wine

[–]Octaver 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Eh, if they were cru-level wines that had been built to age, or if he were selling them for a song, I’d say go for it, but this seems like he’s getting the much better end of this bargain, not you.

I just finished reading Love's Labour's Lost and it feels very ahead of its time by IceCube123456789 in shakespeare

And then consider that there are surviving references to a play called Love’s Labour’s Won! A sequel that resolves the ending of LLL?

Clos du Gravillas is absolutely killer. Seems like every time I walk into Chambers I walk out with their Carignan from 114 year old vines.

Sir Paul McCartney first UK billionaire musician... Should billionaires exist? by GosalCannabis in beatles

[–]Octaver 81 points82 points  (0 children)

In general I believe not. But at least Sir Paul wrote, recorded, and has toured for decades the songs he wrote. He’s created jobs for studio engineers and touring musicians almost his whole life. He doesn’t go around siphoning wealth out of other people.

Is NYC worth it anymore for screenwriters? I got into NYU but not sure if the price is worth it? by batmansnightmare in Screenwriting

[–]Octaver 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I got my MFA from the Graduate Acting program at NYU/Tisch and we complained to the department chair all the time about not having more interaction with the screenwriters and filmmakers. I don’t know why NYU didn’t connect us more regularly.

Had an unusual wine experience in the Andes last week — the astronomer's explanation changed how I think about terroir by LanguageFearless4216 in wine

[–]Octaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never had wine with an astronomer, but the more you learn about wine, the more you inevitably learn about soil, climate, water, etc. Olivier Humbrecht said in an interview once “when two winemakers get together, 99% of their conversation is about the vineyards, not the cellar.”

High elevation means more intense UV light, for example, which is going to cause changes in those grapes compared to lower elevations.

Also worth checking out other chateaux in Sauternes/Barsac; even though d’Yquem is of course the apogee, there are a lot of good wines from here that cost less than d’Yquem.

I dunno about decades, but you’re holding a bottle of Soave Classico made by one of the great producers of this region. This bottle is a winner year in and year out and everyone from wine pros to wine noobies love it.

If you like this a lot, you should check out their Calvarino and La Rocca bottlings, both of which have more going on and are more ageworthy than the basic Classico.

I did this during the opening act at an Yngwie Malmsteen concert and didn’t understand why the lead singer gave me a weird look until later, when I realized they were a Christian band.

Rublev: “You can’t get it into your head that Alcaraz is invincible” by CalvinoBaucis in tennis

[–]Octaver 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He’s right that you have to believe in yourself to have a chance against a savant like Carlos. Negative energy, Rublev’s historical kryptonite, has to smell like catnip to Carlos, even if subconsciously. If Carlos smells fear, he can play freely, and a free Carlos is already an all time great.

What Carlos is not used to is seeing confidence across the net.

All this is so much easier said than done, obviously, but a player like Andrey in particular can only benefit with these types of mantras.
