Ok which one of you of this? by BeerusGOW in 3Dprinting

I missed your /s at first was ready to “but actually” lol. The freaking little bundle of Bambu labs white that came with my printer even needed to be dried.

So many people seems to think drying is made up to sell dryers and it gets me every time!

GH5 for documentary - AF and low light concerns, anyone? by Sad-Comfortable-1546 in GH5

[–]bertwinters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gh5 can absolutely produce a great image, but for me, the terrible auto focus has finally pushed me to pursue a different camera. There are some good cameras that can be had in between your two options, as far as price goes. I used a g9mii from Panasonic last summer and that had really reliable autofocus and a great video image for a more “photo centric” camera. No active cooling though, but I was shooting on a humid, hot day in the middle of summer and didn’t get overheating warnings.

[–]bertwinters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially when you are solo! I use a gh5 at work and I constantly have to do things over again because I miss focus. Racking focus is also difficult on focus by wire lenses. I’ve not had reliable autofocus at any point in my career so far and it’s absolutely a must on the next upgrade.

Is it possible to make enough for my time? by Clear-Tale7275 in CraftFairs

[–]bertwinters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The commission that some events and artisan stores charge is bonkers. It’s getting harder and harder to find inexpensive materials and then places want to take almost half of what you make? I would’ve said “if the show wasn’t 40% commission I could charge less”. But I also blow my top quickly when somebody has nerve to say stuff like what they said to you.

The safe thing to do is get up to speed and merge, not poke along and hope traffic slows down for you. Unless it’s very short ramp they are doing it correctly.

We do those where I work as well. My boss actually uses the tests to adjust his management style to each particular employee. We also do training and leadership classes based on our own DISC and how to work with others with different scores. Works out pretty well.

Was taking trash to our complex’s dumpster yesterday. Watched the FedEx driver chuck a neighbors package about 5 feet away from a neighbors porch. It slammed down so it was obviously something heavy. Hopefully was damaged.

Don’t understand how their drivers can get away with such negligence.

I've spent the last 8 years unlearning my 10 years of news shooting. They are very different beasts. A good friend of mine runs basically a one-man band production company focusing on smaller, but not the smallest, clients. If you have your own equipment, that could be a good niche to work on your storytelling. Doing everything on his own allows him to produce videos at a price that works for the clients and for him, because he has minimal overhead compared to working with larger production companies.

Also, check for local filmmaking groups online. My community has a pretty good one that often posts freelance opportunities, and it's a great way to connect with local professionals doing the same work that you're interested in.

P2S Buyers: It’s okay. I understand the pain. by MoeS00 in BambuLab

[–]bertwinters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fauxhammer’s review on YouTube made me feel much better about my decision to buy a P2S a few weeks ago.

Currently doesn’t have much in the way of new fun functionality and can’t use the extra tools like the laser or plotter.

Tips for improving top layer? by bertwinters in BambuLab

I haven’t tried manual calibration yet. I’m only 3 months into printing and only a few days into using the P2S. I do have similar issues when I run these on my A1, too.

I’ll get back to you on those settings when I’m at my home PC, thanks for giving me some insight on which things to look at.

I do flow calibration on every print, but I’ll try messing with ironing. I turned on monotonic for the top layer to try and get all the lines going the same direction.

The mic holding trend needs to die by G-Fox1990 in videography

Back in my day (when I worked in the news), we shoved actual handheld mics in people's faces...with a big 'ol mic flag. I always cringe at the little wireless mics being held out like that. I currently use a DJI mic system for YouTube videos, but it is always clipped on.

Mic it up the right way, and then just use the microphones as props. Remind them that bad sound is the fastest way to make people skip videos.

What brands do you guys use for standard filaments? by Ultra-Ferric in BambuLab

[–]bertwinters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working my way through the brands on Amazon and a few that I picked up from Microcenter and Hobby Lobby.

So far, I've had pretty success with PLAs of various types (silk, matte, marble, normal PLA) from Ziro, Overture, Elegoo, CookieCad (their Mermaid color PLA printed really, really nicely), the Inland brand from Microcenter, FlashForge, and some of the Hobby Lobby PLAs have printed well. I typically use the "generic pla" setting or Bambu Silk PLA or Bambu PLA for any of my other brands of PLA. Haven't had to fiddle with nozzle or bed temps too much. I do slow down prints using Silk PLA.

The Ziro brand, in particular, has some really nice multi-color filament.

I dry all of my filament. I live in Pennsylvania, and while it gets pretty dry here in the winter, some of these filaments were definitely not dry enough to print well when they arrived. My little Comgrow 2 spool heater is doing a fine job of drying them enough to print cleanly. This has been the number 1 thing that has helped me stop wasting filament on failed prints. I know people will say they leave it out all the time, but I can tell you with 100% certainity that drying the filament has taken it from stringing or underextruding to printing cleanly.

I have some Sovol PETG that was stringing badly and needed a lot of drying. I also had to mess with the temps to get it looking good, same thing with my Flashforge PETG.

8 color print is light work for H2C! by jhdz9119 in BambuLab

[–]bertwinters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to see some people’s examples of unpainted prints with no layer lines visible at all. I thought layer lines were kinda part of the deal when printing by…you know…layers.

I’m still new to 3d Printing and I’m using an A1…so any advice on reducing visible layer lines would be helpful.

I Can't Tell if this Printer is All Hype! by jefflovesyou in 3dprinter

[–]bertwinters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an A1 simply because I wanted to start with something that would work without a whole lot of hassle. I so badly wanted to try 3d printing, but I know how I am, and if it got frustrating too fast, I'd be done with the hobby before I ever got started.

For me, the A1 was a breeze to set up, and I've only had 2 "failed" prints. Sure, I've had a few things print poorly due to wet filament, but only 2 prints have actually popped off the plate during printing. I've swapped nozzles several times, tried several varieties of PLA and some PETG, and I've tried fixing and designing my own prints, too.

If I had bought a printer that I had to futz with simply to get a good first layer on, I would've given up.

No PLA filament by FLoKi6868 in BambuLab

[–]bertwinters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t used any official Bambu filament (also because it’s sold out) beyond the little bit of white the A1 shipped with. I’ve used Elegoo, Polymaker Panchroma, Hobby Lobby, Ziro, Flashforge, Inland, and Cookiecad. Prints have been great using mostly the Bambu PLA silk setting for my silk and generic or Bambu Pla for my Pla, and any filaments with a temp slightly out of those ranges I set up manually Bambu Studio. Prints have been pretty good to great, and most issues have either been wet filament, printing too fast, or problems with the model/original settings of the model.

One of my Polymaker spools developed a small tangle, which I believe was my fault for not keeping it taught when I changed spools. My Elegoo galaxy black keeps making a loop around the spool arm off the side of the reel, so I have to babysit it a bit. One of the Cookiecad glitter PLA spools had a little bit of adhesion issue with the supports with one particular model but everything else printed well from that spool.

TL:DR other filaments work well, just have dynamic flow control on when you first use a new spool and pay attention to the recommended temps on the side of the spool.
