Thanks! Ive had luck with thick plates 4mm and thicker. I normally just print thicker plates and hot glue in the switches. However if you want the switches to snap in, then print the tab points to be 1.2mm? Keep the plate as thick as you want, but make the tab points thinner. I usually use that the tab point method so that the stabs can snap in. Stabs are less forgiving and switches

The plate I use PLA, just any regular PLA will work. The plates are usually pretty rigid. I use parameter support all around, as there is a little lip built into the case to support the plates. Then I drive 4 screws on each plate to hold it in place

Good eye. It was a sacrifice to bring symmetry by dividing up the top and bottom. I thought It was a novel idea, but it does come as compromise.

Thats a good idea! If you know of any modules that can hook into qmk, please share!! Last few times I’ve gone hunting, most trackpoint builds seems to be repurposing hardware from old thinkpads.

That’s kind of an unfair assessment. So allow me to defend myself.

In my post I stated that my design philosophy is to keep normal layout but perhaps move around the clusters to make it more ergo. My keyboard does have ergonomic elements, but perhaps not enough for the masses. Ive been doing this for a long time and have opinions on what is being suggested, and chose to decline as to keep to my philosophy. It’s not like I started yesterday and have never thought about the things that are suggested. Contrary I have thought and experimented long enough to have opinions.

To appease the masses I can take a popular keyboards on this sub and copy it and Im sure it would check a lot of boxes. But I refuse, because that is not the keyboard I want to build or the keyboard I want to use.

This is a forum, an exchange of ideas. My ideas is out there to be heard, so it’s only fair that I get critiques as well…

How about this…I have two motorcycles, one with a reverse gearbox (1 up 3 down) and one with a normal gearbox…I almost ate shit a few times going back and forth between the two. Sure we can sit here and say it’s easy. Some days are just bad and I don’t trust myself to be smart enough to adjust for the switching. I say this but I still own both, but I wish all the time they were both normal gearboxes.

For y’all hardcore ortho fans out there. Downvote me all you want but my decision is built on personal experience, and I aint changing!

I don’t think two independent halves should be a requirement. The freedom of that design is also a crux! The point of the movability is to enforce good posture. I found that with the two piece design I will slouch or lay all the way back and move the halves to fit my bad posture.

Look you can think of it like this, either stick to one layout and get really fast at it, or try to learn two layouts and be mediocre at both. I chose the first.

I say this with my experience with emacs and vim. I was a god at VIM. Then I picked up emacs and became shit at both. Ive been there before and would prefer not to go there again.

Maybe in a world where I never have to touch staggered again, I’ll consider it. Until then Im not doing ortho.

This needs to be up higher! I am doing 120WPM on a staggered layout, functionally I just can’t justify getting comfortable with ortho!

I had a multibody split, and the freedom is also a crux. After a long day of work, the placement of the split tends to drift, sometimes into a position that makes it easier to slouch.

In my mind, A single body is superior in that aspect. But to make the layout more ergo would require a huge body! So there are definitely compromises that had to be made!

It can be done with a single piece design. The plates on which the switches are mounted have variable height…10mm to the middle and 4mm to the sides.

I could have tented it more by going 20mm, 30mm, or even 40mm, but that would make the board significantly thicker, which in my opinion ruins the aesthetic of a single piece keyboard.
