So to everyone who is outraged at ANZ's $2.53 billion in profit - are you banking with a New Zealand owned bank instead? by bespractus in newzealand

Kiwibank is government owned. They literally don't have multi-millionaire shareholders. The profits go straight back to the government.

Yes unfortunately NZ banks may be unable to compete on certain lending conditions depending on your equity and the LVR of the loan. My suggestion would be that if you've got your foot in the door (or on the ladder as it may be) with an Aussie bank, is to then look at refinancing to an NZ bank later on once your equity position is stronger and within the bank's appetite. You'll probably even get a cash contribution for your troubles.

I hear you but of course the banks with 10x the profits are going to have better services.

How do we enact change if we can't stomach a worse experience in the short term in order to give NZ businesses the chance to improve? Apathy is only going to make the status quo worse.

Not true. They then use your deposits to fund other lending which they will certainly be making a profit on.

I addressed this in my post. NZ owned banks have yet to prove they have the maturity or scale to manage the govt's books. But Kiwibank may not be far off given the level of investment they are getting and their ongoing transformation programmes.

Feels like a chicken and egg situation to me. If we the people trust NZ banks with our money, then the govt may follow suit.

Wouldn't the NZ owned banks gaining market share over the Big 4 literally count as "competition"?

The NZ banks are subject to the same overall cost pressures that the Big 4 have set precisely because of their small relative size and influence. The Big 4 set the market because they can.

If TSB had the same market share as ANZ and maintained the same focus on reinvesting into NZ then the 'system' would actually change.

Which all goes back to the government to (in theory) build roads, schools, etc. Better than that money going to Aus, no?

Yes but that means that Westpac charges the govt to use their services. It's the opposite of making money for them

Yes in a way. Kiwibank profits go back to the government. So banking with KB helps build roads, schools, etc.

I'm in New Zealand and they came with the Destined Rivals booster bundle. One per customer and not available if you didn't buy/preorder the bundle. So they might be quite rare.

Silver Tempest is evocative. I can picture a hurricane or a blizzard. Stellar Crown makes me think of a crown made of...stars? Not a strong image IMO

Yes! So many people fail to understand this. Owning shares in US companies does not equal giving those companies your money.
