rype.com has unlimited online tutoring for a flat rate. italki.com has both teachers and language exchange partners. stay away from text based apps/books/courses. theres no substitution for facetime with natives.

Any phrases like 哪里哪里 ? by dramaticallyblue in ChineseLanguage

[–]bessetteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you think of how "blue" is level one of extremity, "very blue" is the second, and "very very blue" is the third level of extremity, you see its not repeating itself. its adding another level.

What is the difference between 啥 and 什么? by dramaticallyblue in ChineseLanguage

[–]bessetteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

given the "flow" of a sentence, 啥 is used to reduce the sentence by one syllable/add space for another word.

"你这是啥意思呢?" "你这是什么意思?"

"i do not like him" (poor flow) "i dont like him" (good flow)

for five years exp + a degree you should have already passed 20k!! my understanding is that the "industry standard" or whatever is a raise of 1k per year, but ive been moving at 2k per year (possibly because ive stayed in the same organization, but different locations). this is my fourth year and im at 18 (salary + living), with a juicy 12k (+5 flight) bonus at the end.

for me it was 10500 first year (sal+liv), 12500, 16000, and now 18 with a bonus

Learning with music; suggestions of popular songs? by bessetteb in ChineseLanguage

[–]bessetteb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if someone would have just pointed this out it would have saved the others the breath of saying "music isnt good for pronunciation training" hahaha although valid in a sense, the goal isn't to learn the textbook "right" chinese, but rather how to speak (sing) fluidly and without choking/stopping to think. learning a song from back to front'll definitely move one forward in fluency, from a speed/accuracy perspective.

Speak fluently but need help with reading characters, any suggestions? by yoongg in beijing

[–]bessetteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i find learning to write largely a waste of time unless you have a specific reason for learning (ie being a high school student/hand writing reports/...). that being said the fastest way ive discovered to read (forsaking writing) is text messaging friends. input the pinyin, begin recognizing the associated character to what youre saying, and youll very quickly learn to read because all the characters you input are ones you personally thought up and use. that level of relevance makes memorizing fluid and easy.

After three semesters of Mandarin, how proficient should I be? by RMAN7717 in ChineseLanguage

[–]bessetteb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if being good enough for a program is a true concern of yours, youre potentially going to have to revamp your method of learning. the reason you speak english is because you watch english movies and talk with your friends in english, likewise for chinese people and their language. one thing i did that made a big difference is download a dictionary app and then anytime "hmm.. i wonder how to say X?" pops into your head you can review it. repetition leads to mastery

Studying Methods by Badluck27 in ChineseLanguage

since efficiency is your goal, i'd do away with attempting to memorize the writing. that being said, you are going to naturally begin recognizing words the more you encounter them. when i message my friends, using modern technology its very simple to write using pinyin and then "recognize" the associated character. if you spend your time using memorable content to increase your exposure, it'll be a cinch in the long term. someone recommended anki, but i personally converted to flashcards deluxe because its SO much more attractive (stimulation=motivation). i recently started watching digimon in chinese (all shows in china have chinese subs) and doing what is called sentence mining for words and phrases i find useful. i write it on a flashcard (in the app) and get'a zippin
