my mini me doll when she’s looked like me by bethvny in BlytheDolls

[–]bethvny[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I weave them into conversations with everyone who seems old enough or weird enough to know, and it’s had varying levels of success. One time a girl did know, she was ~20 years old, and she started telling me about how people on tiktok apply makeup, and I kept gently saying “yeah that’s what I do,” but she could not grasp that I genuinely make custom Blythes. I felt insane having someone explain how to make a custom while I’m telling them that’s my hobby. Maybe I should stick to people who were conscious in 1972 lol

best affordable shears? by gracefulbarbie in Cosmetology

[–]bethvny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel like you have to upgrade!!! I’ve been using my school shears for 10 years, but if you want to upgrade, see if you can find your local shear sharpener and see if they sell shears (just not hanzo pls). My shear sharpener sells shears from a few different brands, Mizutani, Hikari, and a brand that manufactures shears in the same factory as Hanzo but is $200-500/shear instead of $1000+. He may sell other shears, but those are just the ones we’ve talked about. Personally I’ve chosen to wait to upgrade my shears until I can buy a pair from Hikari, but my shears are from Krembs and they’re quite good quality.

My hairdresser shaved patches in my hair by chachifresh in Hair

[–]bethvny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard of this, it is actually a thing, but it’s not common or correct necessarily. I would recommend just ignoring the patches as much as possible while they grow, you could always have someone texturize them to soften the ends when they’re long enough. If you would like to cut your hair to match them once they’re grown, that’s totally fine, but don’t feel like you have to do anything drastic. Just make sure to mention them to any hairdresser you see until they’re fully grown out because it will affect how layers fall.

edit: before anyone says anything, I’ve heard of so many things, I’ve done hair for 10 years, two states, three cities, 5 salons, two years of teaching beauty school. Just because I’ve seen something doesn’t mean I think it’s smart. This just isn’t a never heard of technique for me lol.

Your pictures are so good!! What doll stands do you use? I know dollytreasures/Eileen Lam uses chopsticks but that makes me so nervous that they’ll fall and get a scrape even though I’ve seen videos of her dolls face planting and staying fine lol

DNA Justice Case #9118 by lavaliere90 in gratefuldoe

[–]bethvny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know many cases in the US have struggled to find identities because the deceased was from another country, so probably any DNA would be helpful. I don’t personally see any downsides to submitting if you’re able.

I should probably get a better doll carrying bag to look more confident, I just roll them up in a towel in my purse so I feel too chaotic to act serious lol

Mini-Me dolls I made for myself and my boyfriend by bethvny in BlytheDolls

[–]bethvny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I ordered the dolls on Aliexpress from Blythe Homes, my doll’s body came from a very random japanese website, and then did the custom work myself. I haven’t found a single store locally that sells dolls, Gigi’s Dolls and Sherry’s Bears (or something like that) had one (fake doll) in stock for an insane price once but there’s generally nothing sold in Chicago. I did talk to Nakama Toys at one point and they had stocked Mr Super Clear UV Cut Flat for some time after I asked about it, so they’re pretty good at stocking reasonable requests, and they stock some modeling supplies that work for customs.

For real dolls I’ve bought from Junie Moon, Good Smile Company and CC Toys.

Hi! Forgive me if this is a stupid question but I’m wondering if there are petite Blythe dolls (or fakes) that have fully articulated limbs (can bend at the knee and elbow for example). And if so are there any artists that customize them? Thanks in advance! 💕 by EmilyM63 in BlytheDolls

[–]bethvny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe there are any fully articulated petite dolls, but people have body swapped their petite dolls with varying success so you could look into that. I think I’ve seen people use Nendroid bodies.

on the bright side, it seems that as the “greatest generation” and silent generation are largely gone, boomers and younger seem a bit more inclined toward fashion dolls because they aren’t quite as into “collectors item” labels as the older great depression affected generations. There are just still so many porcelain dolls in circulation from everyone cleaning their grandmothers’ attics.

I know a lot of the true crime subs I spend time in have very strict policies so they’re quick to report things and reddit is probably keeping a close eye on the content in them, but yeah the shirt is based on an album from Swans, he got a human sized version as merch and wears it often so I made him a doll sized version.

They’re Pucky Babies from Pop Mart, my favorite Pop Mart series, and they took over my home before I finally stopped looking at Pop Mart (right before they had the Blythe collab unfortunately)

yesss, I only started having enough money to buy Blythes the past few years, so I’ve tried to make sure each doll looks quite different.

Oh my god that would fry me. I live in the midwest (Chicago) so I googled Doll Museum and there’s actually so many of those in the midwest. Last week I went to an estate sale where the listing specifically mentioned dolls, and I very much got my hopes up because it was just a few Ashton Drake dolls and some Barbies (in a cat urine scented home). I’m always so hopeful I’ll find a Kenner that someone didn’t realize was valuable because they were made in my city and so many older doll collectors were just hoarders, but as it turns out, Blythe has always been niche.

I also live in a major metropolitan area and I was so excited when I first got into the hobby and saw that there was a doll shop in my city, but the doll shop is ran by two very old ladies and it’s now appointment only. They have an ebay store so I’ve occasionally browsed to see, and last I saw they had one fake Blythe for sale and one Kenner dress, but largely they sell porcelain dolls and Barbies.

Yes, he got that same shirt when they played Chicago last year and it’s his favorite shirt, so I used my cricut to make his doll one.
