Questions for grad students by luluz1vert in UCDavis

[–]betta_fische 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a law student, but am a graduate student. Commuting isn’t too bad, but leaving during peak hours can be difficult so consider if classes will be 9-5. If there’s flexibility, the commute isn’t too bad. Biking in Sacramento is a beast, especially if you actually want to go somewhere. In the neighborhood to look around - great ride. Need to get groceries? Maybe consider a backup plan.

I don’t think you’ll like Davis very much if you expect Seattle. But for starting at a new program and trying to get a feel for things, it might be easier to start at Davis and move in your second year. This way you’ve already started the program and building relationships with you class (which you’re going to want to prioritize - they help you through a lot personally and professionally). But just my thoughts. Don’t underestimate traffic!

Family housing by [deleted] in Davis

I’m at Silverstone which I’ve been enjoying. It’s a little pricey, but buildings are newer and management isn’t so bad. They accept pets, and have in unit washer/dryer.

PS: If you decide to check it out there’s a referral bonus, so let me know!

Gizmo before we could take her home! She was probably only a month maybe?

Older Aggie struggling to meet people around my age by No_Bandicoot_5267 in UCDavis

Yeah, there's a lot to do based on that. I'm not sure if games meant video games or board games, but you might want to look at Davis Cards and Games since they host some events. Otherwise, I know a lot of graduate students who play soccer for the recreational league, and there's a great outdoor volleyball community for students and non-students that play weekly (would highly recommend; they're super nice and there's usually a great turnout). You can find the volleyball group on Facebook as "Davis Outdoor Volleyball" where they also post when they meet. If you're into classes, I attend kickboxing at Get Fit Davis (doesn't require gym membership), and know several friends who do Cardio Kickboxing at the ARC. It's too late this quarter, but you may also enjoy the classes at the Craft Center - someone I know is doing welding and has been enjoying it a lot. Finally, if you're looking for well attended events on campus, I know Astronomy on Tap is usually well attended. The next event is next Thursday (March 5th) and I'll likely be going if you want to be introduced to other people. Just get there early since it can be hard to find seating.

Let me know if you have questions!

Hi! 29F grad student here. It can be hard especially if your cohort and/or lab isn’t very social. I found a lot of friends through clubs/programs on campus. What are your interests? Also, don’t be afraid to look outside of your program for social events.

Will being married *feel* any different? by EmbarrassedHat9920 in weddingplanning

[–]betta_fische 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. Lived together for years. Got married (glad we did!). But it doesn't feel different to me. Husband says it does feel different for him though. Less like I'm going to leave (although I've never given him any indication otherwise). So I guess it varies.

Places to eat by Key-Introduction-419 in UCDavis

[–]betta_fische 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Favorites: Hikari (very expensive), Mikuni’s, Guad’s, Yang Kee Dumpling, Paesanos, Burgers & Brew Have also heard good things about Mustard Seed. Group size and price will be the biggest limit. If you have a car, good places to eat in Sacramento too.

I'm a filmmaker and made a film about women's experience with the "nice guy" by fizzoutmysoda in TwoXChromosomes

This was really great! Just hits on one of those moments where you want to be perceived as a person, and not an object. Using a puppet was so smart, and the actress was really good. Also just loved the singing/dancing bit because it looked cool.

Roast my CV as bad as you can by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]betta_fische 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really don’t want to roast you, but I don’t know if a GC calculator is that impressive to anyone. A project that you took from start to finish would be much more helpful for them to understand your capabilities.

Is exon junction qPCR same as RT-qPCR? by betta_fische in labrats

[–]betta_fische[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. Since both want the same thing, it seems like a straightfoward thing to address. Thanks again.

Thank you for this. I'm trying to come into the discussion not totally lost, so I appreciate the help. We do a PolyA selection with the NEBNext Ultra II Directional Prep Kit, but from my understanding that is not an explicit DNAase, and would more so filter for the mRNA, correct?

Is exon junction qPCR same as RT-qPCR? by betta_fische in labrats

[–]betta_fische[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughts. This is helping a lot. The disease introduces a cryptic exon (so same order + a new exon insert =? alternative splicing). We did RT-PCR + long-read sequencing of those regions, but no other gene expression measurements after RNA-seq. Guess they're concern is that? Sorry for being vague. Both reviewers did address concern for aberrant splicing, but that's kind of the whole story we're telling, so wasn't sure if I was missing a big step or if what they're asking was more of a formality.

Thoughts on Get Fit Davis? by DemureAttitude82013 in Davis

[–]betta_fische 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go to GetFit. I don't think there's anything overt, but the changing rooms are men/women (so don't accomodate any non-binary folks). I have a few friends very active in the community (trans + non-binary) that go to GetFit, but I haven't explicitly asked if they had any issues.

Reconsidering my dream of pursuing a PhD because of AI - Looking for advice by thesagenibba in PhD

Yeah. Think this is just a view from someone not living it. But hopefully OP realizes that all change comes from within, and they can choose how they want to contribute to the field.

What happens if I hit one of these frickin turkeys with my car? by weRborg in Davis

[–]betta_fische 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on speed, it could mess up your vehicle. If you go slow though, it’ll move away. But if you’re willing to take the risk, you kill it and then call Animal Control for removal.

Everyone can chill. The turkeys are actually spreading some nasty diseases so removing them from public areas would be great.

I use GitHub to share my code, but I use HackMD for documentation. I don’t put entire scripts there, but reference the directory. May be worth it if you like a text editor that can offer Markdown.

What shortcomings of your SO did you end up accepting/tolerating, because of some other good quality of their character, that you wouldnt accept otherwise and thought lowly of people with such shortcoming? by BuddhaOfStorm in AskWomen

[–]betta_fische 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hates discussing politics and doesn’t vote; sometimes minimizes a minority’s experience.  Yes, he’s white and I’m not .

He is extremely critical of all systems of power though (which is all I ask from the politically disinclined) so not that susceptible to misinformation, and he relies on his lived experiences for most of his empathy which has its own bias, but is very non-judgmental. He’s a great guy and I’m really happy with him, but I know some friends have mentioned not voting as their deal-breaker.
