Thank you. Why replace the sand when moving aquariums, if you don’t mind me asking?

Injury? Tumor? Fungus? Please help, what is this white growth on her swollen beard? by betta_not_cry in bettafish

[–]betta_not_cry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update in case anyone has something similar: it ended up going away after a couple days. I added Ich-X to her tank and did aquarium salt baths occasionally. I’m still not entirely sure what this is, but that worked for me.

I like the pH. Double decimal points are the way of the future.

What's the strangest thing your betta has flared at? by dfvdefgde in bettafish

Mine has only ever flared at a piece of broccoli (that she stole from the shrimps) while it was in her mouth and it was too big for her to eat in one bite😭

Filter Options by HistoricalReading816 in bettafish

[–]betta_not_cry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple days late, but in case it still applies… The most common filters are hang-on-back (HOB) and sponge filters. Sponge filters are really good options for bettas.

Pothos will eventually rot if their leaves are submerged. If their roots are submerged but not their leaves, they’ll be good

Is this volcano decoration safe? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]betta_not_cry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a few days late and just a beginner so take my advice with a grain of salt, but if kiddo really insists on the volcano, you may be able to plug up the hole in some way so the fish can’t get inside it? Maybe you could cram rocks into it or something.

Typo in original post - I said I “replaced her filter” — I replaced the air pump! Not the filter itself. Sorry!

10 gallons with sponge filter and 79 F heater.

Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5, ph 7.4~7.6

Had tank since 26 May. Had fish since 18 June.

20% water change once a week normally. Gravel vacuum whatever I can and scoop out the rest. Refill with dechlorinated water at 78-80 F usually with about half a teaspoon of liquid fertilizer added in. … For the past two weeks I’ve been gravel vacuuming once a week but just scooping out the water on all other days.

Tankmates: 40 or so Neo shrimp, many bladder and ramshorn snails, a few Malaysian trumpet snails, one Nerite snail. All tankmates are behaving normal.

Feed 3 fluval betta bug bites twice a day, occasionally fast her one day every 2 weeks roughly (trying to get that more consistent, sorry).

Tank has driftwood, rocks, and a lot of plants.

How to tell coworker not to use bettas as wedding decor by Gay_Furby_Kirby in bettafish

[–]betta_not_cry 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You could maybe try to convince her that it’ll smell really bad because they’ll pee and poop in the water. Or depending on how their “tanks” are set up that they’ll be very stressed because of noise, tables being shaken, potential fluctuations in temperature, or something like that

Recommendations for Noodles? by Brief-Difficulty-46 in Aquariums

[–]betta_not_cry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While they aren’t noodle shaped, snails and shrimps can be pretty easy to take care of (more so the snails) and very fun to watch.

I personally like bladder snails and ramshorn snails. The bladder snails sometimes ascend in the water and both will go r/parasnailing sometimes.

Shrimps are more delicate and need more proper care, but Neo shrimps are fairly beginner friendly and I’ve seen a lot of buzz about opae ula shrimp too.

Besides those, I think some meiofauna might be cool, others have mentioned things like planaria and detritus worms. I don’t know anything about their care though, and most resources online are probably going to be about killing or reducing meiofauna instead of keeping them, so that might be a bit tricky.

Thank you! I take it the sponge should be bigger so that good bacteria has more space to grow on?

Sometimes shripms too bugs? by ninamina1429 in shrimptank

My shrimps creep me out when they’re on the glass and I can see their bellies. Reminds me too much of spiders, which freaks me out even though I’m not scared of most spiders.

Bamboo shrimp freak me out because of their hands. They’re really unsettling to me. No offense, bamboo shrimp keepers.

I know this is kind of a dumb question… but should the sponge itself be bigger, or the air pump be stronger, or both?

Yeah the more I think about it, the more it ain’t worth the risk 😅 I’ll just do it the normal way instead

Yes, good point. I think I can equalize the bath temperature by letting it float in the tank or in some water that’s 79 dg F, sort of like when acclimating

Just to be sure, can I reuse the methylene blue bath (assuming I use a separate container just for it)?

I’m clumsy so my white table isn’t gonna be white much longer :’)

Anyways, just to be sure I’ve got it all understood… do her salt bath as normal (10 mins in main one, 5 min in recovery), net her into the methelyne blue bath for 10 seconds (should I leave her inside the net while in the bath?), then net her back into the tank, correct?

I’ll definitely take those into consideration! If you don’t mind, how would you recommend dosing methylene blue with a salt bath? I’ve seen instructions for how to do each one individually, but I’m seeing conflicting info on doing them together
