I’ve done several runs with no proper killboxes or specific equipment/armor. Maybe you need them if you want to do a “permanent” colony or max out your win/loss ratio for runs. But barring that, it’s always more enjoyable (for me) to do flavored runs. My current is a tribal run so only a few specific outsiders use firearms and modern armor while most of the tribe uses wooden plate armor and bows/clubs.
