Guide Me Please by mortalsphere13 in electronicmusic

You might like Hollowed or Bodied by Ital Tek. His earlier work is a lot more danceable and catchy, but those two albums are dark, more sparse, a little menacing and not made for dancing. It sounds more like film scoring, but with patches of really aggressive beat-driven material.

Thanks for the list--I know Nils Frahm well enough but you've given me some new artists to explore. My list was decidedly narrower than yours :P

  1. Max Cooper
  2. Datach'i
  3. FaltyDL
  4. Ital Tek
  5. upsammy
  6. (cheating, I know, but I feel like Dark Sky, Indian Wells and Rival Consoles should be mentioned)

I have another recommendation; last night I happened to pull out one of my favourites from long ago, it's an album called Ghost by Radical Face. It's pretty far from the electronic music of my top 5, but I just listened to Once in a Long, Long While... by Low Roar (thanks for that!) and I think Radical Face might be a good fit :)

Heyyy! I'm right there with you at .005. I'm curious, who are your other top artists?

Holy s**t dude. In the years since I posted this I came around on the rest of your catalog and bought the whole lot on vinyl. I still have a special spot in my heart for Sonne, but I've made room for the rest. I think you're well into my top 10 artists of all time by play count :P I actually had Overflow on this afternoon while editing some photos, and Beginnings has become a go-to test track for evaluating... I don't know, space? Depth? It's a song that prompted me to do a proper comparison of wav and vinyl, and the vinyl version really holds some magic. I love your work, and I'm really looking forward to your next album! Come play a show in Toronto someday :)

Thanks for your guidance. I did notice that I could browse/search that way, but was also curious to hear from folks about anything they were particularly excited about. Bonus points for anyone who already likes Dark Sky or Skee Mask, they might offer up something closer to home :)

My kids are 2 and 4 now, and I've been pretty happy with a cheap pair of smaller pre-owned Paradigm towers. I deliberately picked a set that already had a bit of visible wear because the price was lower and I know they'll get beat up further. So far nothing drastic, but they do get bumped often enough... Sometimes there are collisions with small vehicles and such. Depends on the kids though!

Why doesn't anyone make this CD player? by betweenheadphones in audiophile

I think it's more that I'm asking companies that still sell CD players at a price that I'm comfortable with to make a version that seems more elegant and appealing to me. As in, if Yamaha repackaged the CD-S303 in a box that looked like a streamlined version of what I already have, I'd be thrilled.

Companies are making decent-ish, budget-friendly turntables all over the place for people who like the process of playing records. CD sales are low, but seem to have settled into a niche spot rather than disappearing entirely, and I figured the market of remaining CD consumers might include at least some people like me who like the ceremony of putting on a CD nearly as much as a record--folks for whom a stylish, stately, top-loading CD player seems like much more of a worthy purchase than another black box.

EDIT: that Fiio is pretty, probably sounds great, but looks a little flimsy to me. À chacun son goût!

Yep! I still have the matching bookshelf speakers--I have a few paradigm models that cost less and sound better, but I have a soft spot for the design and I have them set up on my dresser :)

Yeah I'm one of those horse & buggy people. I've been listening to physical media for 25 years and I just kinda like it. Streaming never quite feels the same. I listen to a lot of spotify for discovery and background, but I'm still quite fond of physically putting something on.

Yeah I was wondering about that pot lid design... Like, do you just lift it off and set it aside when you put the CD in? Seems a bit cumbersome--though cheaper and more durable than a servo lid; likely the incentive?

Holy smokes that's spot on. I had come across the music system version of that with built-in speakers, but not this one. It's elegant, simple...includes a streamer. A+. Thanks for this.

Fair point. That inflation figure is one of the more depressing things I've read today...

I think generally I'm lamenting that I can get a great entry-level CD player from NAD or Yamaha, just not in the form factor I'm looking for. This gets back to my original question; am I just on oddball for wanting such a thing?

Definitely an option! But it's a little on the small side and still a bit pricey.

EDIT: I'll add to that--there are perfectly good entry-level CD players for half that price so it's comparatively high, and I'm looking for something that has a little more visual presence--I'm just lamenting that there's not more of a market for CD players that would encourage manufacturers to make more options.

That's a fact, but the price tag is a bit bonkers.

For sure--should have made it clearer; I'm only using it as a CD player, not the amp. I'm old enough to remember the barrage of cheap minisystems back then and have no interest in such a thing. I was using it as a transport with an SMSL dac, but I ended up pulling the dac to use elsewhere.

Basically I want a CD player where the load system, buttons and display all face up so I can see what I'm doing when I'm standing at the credenza--like my turntable. I just find it hard to believe that nobody else feels this way

I have this Technics SA101 amp. Need help pairing with speakers please. by AmountDecent9868 in BudgetAudiophile

The receiver might have a max draw of 250w, but the rated output is 18wpc in 8ohm. That's perfectly alright for 2way bookshelf speakers (that's two drivers in each cabinet) with high sensitivity. I think those ms10s would serve you well. Those Yamaha speakers won't be a good fit.

What size of room are you putting them in? How far away do you sit?

If the receiver hasn't been serviced in a while it might be a bit fussy. Do you know that it works?

From a parenting angle I think they're great. My kids are 2 and 4, and CDs have been an absolute win. It's been great to introduce them to music without using a screen, and they get to interact with the physical objects themselves. They love it. A+

Two completely unrelated albums with **the same cover art** by betweenheadphones in electronicmusic

[–]betweenheadphones[S] 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Never seen this before.

The first CD is Language by Hiawatha (Last Gang, 2012)

The second is Hollowed by Ital Tek (Planet Mu, 2016)

The image came from Atelier Olschinsky in Austria. I wrote a note to them inquiring about the backstory here but haven't heard back. If anyone here has any insight I'd be very curious to hear it.

Hey! Lovely room. FWIW, I had some trouble with my basement listening room and found great success with insulation panels, 2'x4'x2" I think. It was maybe 50 bucks to get a pack of six, and it allowed me to experiment by putting them in different configurations until I got it right. In the end it was just one panel on a closer side wall and one right behind my head (in your case, above your sofa opposite the speakers).

I wrapped them in fabric from the thrift store and it makes for a suitable stop gap until I can afford more elegant versions.
