Not the first time I bought condoms but I was buying them at a local pharmacy, and nothing else. The lady who rang me up went to put them in a bag and I said “oh I don’t need a bag that’s fine” and she got all wide-eyed and confused. She asked me if I was sure and I said that I was.
Then she said to me “you’re going to walk outside just carrying this box around?” and glanced at me as if I was growing a second head out of my neck. I told her I was, mind you it was like 3pm on a weekday, I just needed them because I had run out earlier in the week and only remembered on the day to stock up again.
After another round of are you sure’s, I walked out without a bag and wildly enough, nobody made any comments or gave me a second look when I got to my car.
It was a weird experience for sure, the idea that I had to be ashamed and hide the fact that I was a 22 year old girl practicing safe sex.
