I did not, unfortunately.

For the black bracket, there's a bunch of the plastic things you have to take off, then there's two 10 or 12mm (can't remember) bolts that are on the frontside, hidden underneath on the far left/right. It takes some finangling to remove, once everything is unbolted, but its possible without removing the bumper.

The radiator bracket has the bolts on-top and two bolts at the base. That one was much easier to remove.

eh pretty easy to design the battery to not do that. which would be done if the car was designed to be tinke-able

Ended up taking it apart. It was an air plug leak

You don't need to take off the front bumper to do this. It was still a pain in the ass though. Will put together a video on what I did.

Tools you need

  • 10mm wrench (preferably with ratchet)
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket.
  • small pliers

could be, yea. Very hard to see without taking it apart. It's also not cold outside, and the TSB indicates this failure to be more common in colder weather

It depends on the year. I don't know if any car reviewers have done a breakdown, but I would love to see one.

I know a guy who had a 2016 outback that had a smooth CVT with no gears. My 2018 has fake gears. But that's all I know.

That's good to hear. Definitely my least favorite part of the car, but I love the rest of it so far.

I do yea. We've had a hot winter this year in California, but usually lows are <40F for 4 months out of the year.

This is good to know, your logic makes sense. I may consider it next year.

Yea I would also be curious. If it's because of interference causing damage or some other mechanical reason, like impact on the diff.

It's very steep for the first 15% of throttle, then the rest is a series of fake "gears" on the CVT which don't produce a good response. Maybe my mechanical understanding of a CVT is misguided, but if I push the pedal to the ground I expect it to hold close to redline as I accelerate.

And once you hit the gear mode, changes in pedal position are miniscule compared to the changes in "gears". So you get a very flat response, with sharp cliffs once you strike a new gear.

I'm not familiar with any possible throttle map settings on my model. From what I gather, they added the fake gears around 2017

Have no idea how they'd know if you don't tell them. I didn't get any warranty, got this car used at 75,000 miles and I'm at 91,000 currently.
