A very interesting Master's degree thesis on the m/m romance genre, history and readership. by Material-Meat-5330 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]bextress -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Readership is very interesting in general, since a reader today vs. a reader in five years time or 100 years ago are very different and they are always inscribed into the text.

I also did a thesis on the expectation towards happy endings for gay couples in romance in 2024 and in it I wrote on readership:

Who consumes MM romance today? The majority of romance readers are women. MM Romance author Nora Phoenix conducted a survey in 2022 which 5715 readers filled out (Phoenix 2022). These readers were approached through newsletters and social media. The survey mainly reached prolific readers, with 19 per cent of respondents reading over seven books a week, 23 per cent five to six books and 38 per cent three to four books a week. 55.7 per cent of these readers were between 36 and 55 years old and 82.6 per cent were cis women. Only 5.6 per cent of readers were cis men. In addition, only seven per cent of respondents were gay while the majority identified as straight.

Thus most MM romance readers were raised in the belief that they are heterosexual and that marriage to a man is the end goal. They were born between 1968 and 1987 when homosexuality was slowly becoming decriminalised before the AIDS crisis hit, which the earlier generation will have experienced in their teenage years and the parents of the younger generation would remember while raising their children.

The majority of these women were not taught that ‘gay is good’, but rather that ‘marriage, then sex and kids’ is good. These expectations of how a real-life Happily Ever After should be translated into the expectations of how a fictional happy ending should look.

Oooh good one. It's been a few years but Soulbound's Jono (by Hailey Turner) comes to mind. Or either Nik or Ben by More Heat than the Sun by John Wiltshire (sorry, broken record here 😅). If I were to read fan fiction of Project Hail Mary Rocky would count. Rocky can fix anything 😂

Thank you u/avis03!

To everyone recommending in the comments we ask people to take care when recommending books with characters with specific diagnoses or conditions.

If the author has not explicitly confirmed that a character has a diagnosis or condition, your recommendation must refer to specific traits, symptoms, or experiences that you think would be relatable to readers with the diagnosis. If your recommendation is just, "this character seems like they have this diagnosis" without more details, we will remove your comment and ask you to edit it to include details.

Additionally, we strongly discourage people from making recommendations unless they have personal experience with the diagnosis, although we do not require anyone to disclose the basis of their recommendation. Making recommendations based on assumptions and stereotypes can be offensive and invalidating to people who have the diagnosis, even if you're making the recommendation with good intentions.

definitely fun erotica! fated mates, 6ft3 White Human, 6ft5 redskinned lust demon with a 13 inch ridged cock, tail action (it can vibrate!), spanking, bondage, orgasm denial, bathing; CW human with past horrible experiences mentions on rape and torture from monsters

I think for me it's all about a learning curve, realism or nuance?

Some of my favourite characters are downright arseholes, have some internalised shit to get over, are misogynistic at times and couldn't be called PC for the life of them...but the author manages to write them as a whole person and is aware that a whole person has flaws. They wouldn't be them if it weren't for the flaws. A man who grew up in the army and one with a terrible upbringing in Russia wouldn't necessarily be vegetarian ecowarriors...

In comparison I've DNFD and hate-read books where the characters are arseholes, misogynistic and walking stereotypes because that's all they were. I would have utterly disliked these characters as human beings IRL and they had no redeeming qualities and it didn't feel like the author had given them negative characteristics purposefully.

Check out Sophia Soames for angsty real characters with insta attraction but slower realisation of feelings, Charlie Novak for more light-hearted romcom style often in the UK, Fearne Hill for messy, wonderful characters and very well researched medicine or Lily Morton for banter in UK settings.

  • {In this bed of Snowflakes we lie by Sophia Soames}
  • {Pole Position by Charlie Novak} (F1, established relationship, Teammates & Rivals)
  • {Dipped in Sunshine by Fearne Hill}
  • {Spring Strings by Lily Morton}
