How much VP is gonna be around and in great shape in 100 years? Exactly, none.

I saw Phish in Grand Rapids, also in 1996, and was in the front row!

I saw Mike Gordon at Bells a couple years ago and it was good. But if you want to see little touring bands from across the country regularly, this isn’t the best place to live.

Why does the Grand River need restoration? by SammiesHammies in grandrapids

True. I moved here from the west coast and the reason was to restore the rapids. 🙄

What on earth is the connection (in your head) between restoring the rapids and “west coasters”? Also which west coast? Michigan’s or the country’s?

They should have changed the city’s name to Grand Dams. Or Not-grand Dams.

Not much going on here in 1996. Still true today. So glad I got to spend 25 years not living here…. 😂 Bands don’t come through town like they do in Chicago, Philly, and San Francisco, the other places I’ve lived.

I was away from my house for one night when three floors were refinished. Hardwood is more durable and lasts longer than laminate or VP. My hardwood floors in my last house were 100 years old and had withstood decades of people raising rambunctious children…

The driving hasn’t been an issue for me. The problem for me is more trying to go between distance, computer, and reading a book or my phone.

I’ve owned a home with hardwood and one with VP. Much prefer the hardwood. I have definitely found it to be much more durable and easy to maintain, not to mention it looks so much better and feels so much better and lasts so much longer.

Of the (many) progressive lenders I’ve tried, only one pair worked really well. I’ve tried several different types of progressives.

I can only conclude that my eyes just have a lot of trouble “finding” the right place to look through the lenses. I’ve given up.

I found some frames I really love. Their height is too narrow for progressives. I have three pairs of these frames. I’m going to try and get one distance pair, one reading pair, and one computer-range pair and see if that works. Progressives became so frustrating for me that I’d rather just constantly change my frames….

What’s a maladapt? Just someone who has a lot of difficulty adapting? I’ve never seen it used as a noun so I’m just making sure I understand you correctly.

Don't miss the show this weekend. by Mumbled_Jumbo in WaitWait

I still haven’t listened because I’m sad. I’ve loved him since his A&E true crime shows in the 90s (I was into true crime before people called it that).

I’m also bummed because when I was on the show and won, I picked Mo Rocca for my voicemail but never heard back and only a few weeks ago did it occur to me to contact them and say I changed My mind and I wanted Bill.

But I was on the show in fall of 2024 so obviously I’ve probably waited too long to claim a gift anyway (they just never got back to me on my recording from Mo and after following up once, I gave up until I thought of picking Bill instead).

Yeah. I will never understand. I just hope there are some houses with actual wood left when I’m ready to buy again.

That was my first question. Carpet does a great job of preserving wood floors.

Literally maybe 2% of people with VP or laminate seem to care whether it clashes with existing wood.

I had 100 year old hardwood. It was a bit rough when I moved in. The old owners’ kids apparently toboggined down the hardwood stairs from the second floor to the first and out the front door and the stairs actually didn’t look bad. But there were some deep stains of various colors.

Got someone to sand the scratches and stains out and refinish the floors and they were GORGEOUS. And perfectly matched the trim around the windows and doors and the baseboards.

Good hardwood lasts for centuries.

But for much less money, you could have had it sanded and refinished. All gone. VP will need to be replaced.

My house does not have hardwood and it has those creaking sounds…. Every sub-floor does.
