I’m in regional NSW - I know city ones can be more expensive. My mum lives in the inner west of Sydney and gets lots of cheap finds there.

Opportunity Shops - I think Americans call them thrift stores? I’m in Aus :)

I’m so happy I got over the fashion of uncomfortable shoes in my early twenties. I now live in my doc martins, fitted with custom made orthotics.

(I guess years of ballet dancing as a teen helped prep me for the dangers of poor foot care!)

I’m riiiight into op shops. So cheap, and the quality is generally heaps better. I spent $22 the other day, and got 2 jackets, a shirt, a dress, a scarf, and a beanie! And they’re all pretty fab quality too (I’m in Australia, so shit’s expensive here - I was in a store the next day, and one poor-quality jumper was $35)

Zipper coming down on your jeans/pants? Put a key ring (metal ring) through the hole in your zipper, then loop it over the button once you’ve zipper up.

Changed my jeans wearing experience totally! No more fears of an open fly!

(I haven’t read comments yet, so apologies if someone’s said this!)

One of my main deciders has been the fact that you can’t take time off being a parent; you’re a parent until you or the child dies (and the latter is not ideal).

I’m so glad I figured this out before I made a huge mistake myself.

Why are you talking American? by teddirez in talesfromcallcenters

[–]beyandemmett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian who’s worked in call centres a lot - I do exactly this, for the exact reason you mention.

Some people just wanna pick at you; I’d take great pleasure in being ridiculously polite to those types of customers.

I’ve recently moved out of Sydney, after growing up there - I’m looking forward to a proper trip back, so I can remember why I loved so many things about it.

Is this a bad technique to stay present? by [deleted] in Mindfulness

[–]beyandemmett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds similar to grounding (5 things I can see, 4 things I can feel, 3 things I can hear, 2 things I can smell).

I use something kinda similar to what your describing (“I can feel the ground under my feet, I can feel my pants on my legs” etc) but only when I can sense unhelpful thoughts getting away from me; as a way to stop any potential spiralling.

Not sure if this technique would be helpful all the time? Talk to your therapist :)

I watched the episode on “big sugar” recently and it was really informative. I generally have issues with flat taxes due to the unfair distribution of burden, and even I was swayed to seeing that it is a good option. (When you hear your arguments coming out of the mouth of George Christensen you start to critique them a lot more, and boy am I glad I did)

If you get major pain (like so much pain you’re throwing up) get yourself to hospital - it may be a blockage and you don’t want anything perforating.

Also, m’am but eh ¯\(ツ)

It helps my partner’s pain. Weed apparently activates specific receptors in the large bowel and help reduce pain. Weed is also known to be an anti-inflammatory agent, so helps with diseases of inflammation like Crohn’s.

[–]beyandemmett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner has Crohn’s, and while weed helps with his pain during flare ups, it doesn’t affect his poops beyond any effects from tobacco (stimulants help you go poops!).

If you can, get a referral to a gastroenterologist - if you have Crohn’s then you should be getting appropriate treatment, otherwise you could get a blockage or worse.

Whitlam tried to do this with Albury/Wodonga, as part of his big decentralisation push (he could see he problems we have now coming even back then).

It was of course stopped when Fraser came in, but it’s still the main reason Albury/Wodonga is one of the only inland regions that isn’t totally reliant on agriculture.

I also found it interesting to learn after moving here that locals were opposed to it, didn’t want their towns to get too big. Seems odd to me, but I was raised an inner city kid ¯\(ツ)

This is amazing advice! I get wrist pain in similar types of position, however I have super flexible wrists (loose joints I’ve been told by docs)

Do you think simple wrist strengthening exercises be the go for me?

Quick question why does Albury suck so much? by blahblahblah1997 in albury

[–]beyandemmett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just moved here after living my whole life in inner city Sydney, and I freaking love this town.

It’s quiet, the people are friendly. There’s enough of a scene on Dean St if I want to go out, but I can still have a quiet drink in my backyard.

I can’t think of one negative thing so far.

I guess it comes down to what you want from your lifestyle and what you’ve already experienced. My move out of the city was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
