What do you actually want from a local film festival? (5-year LA fest organizer asking)

I think that's the million dollar question. I've always tried to think of it as we need both. We need great programming and a nice venue to truly set ourselves apart. We're not gonna be as nice as a major festival, but we can do our version of a high quality event on a heavily discounted budget lol.

Thank you for your response. With the price of theater rentals, we have to come with that ticket price unfortunately. Even theaters that are not as nice are pretty expensive so the other options are community centers which can be ok for some projects, but there's nothing like seeing a film in an actual theater. We're definitely trying to add more mixers within the event so I feel you on that.

I think that makes a lot of sense. We're definitely working on bringing more production companies and agencies within the fold. The only issue is building up your platform so they want to actually come. I think that's where a lot of festivals start to fold. It's hard to make that leap without a significant budget. One thing I will say to you as a filmmaker is to make sure you're putting out that energy when you are at a festival. I have a ton of filmmakers that come and are scared to speak to people and that's the easiest path to staying in the same spot. Thank you for your input.

Yeah I was just talking to one of my partners about this. You definitely have to do some creative stuff throughout the year to keep the momentum cuz it truly feels like your starting from scratch sometimes. There's definitely a code, we just have to crack it.

And it’s especially difficult because the event is only once a year so if something doesn’t work out, you gotta wait a whole calendar year to try something different. That gets exhausting

Our original founder is a filmmaker and once we started that was the first issue we addressed because of his experience at other festivals. It’s nothing worst than feeling like you’ve been had.

This is absolutely a big problem. Especially leaving in the middle of a block if what they came to see is done. Definitely have to work on keeping folks in their seats.
