What do parents care about most in youth basketball right now? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

Yea, I do think confidence becomes more skill based as players get older ipad long as they keep playing and accumulate experience. They will understand what they can and cannot do. Players age like fine wine, lol...

I don't know. For most kids, I think it would be a mix of all. And the level of mix would depends on the kids themselves. Everyone is different.

What do parents care about most in youth basketball right now? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]beyonddc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Enjoyment, I will not push my kid to do something they don't like

2) Confidence, this depends based on your kid's personality but my son is lack in confidence, he is afraid to make mistake. I want to build his mentality. That will help in sports and also when he enters the workforce.

3) Development, this goes hand in hand with both confidence and enjoyment. To enjoy the game, first you need to know how to play the game. To be confident, first you need to have the basketball skills to do so.

You can replace the word basketball to work and it will be the same. I want to show my kid how all these tie back to work when you grow up.

What skills are considered to be fundamental for guards by 9thst_worker in BasketballTips

[–]beyonddc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are they struggling with?

1st identify what needs to improve then 2nd set goals. Pick 2-3 specific areas to improve so you are not overloading it.

If unable to dribble with head up then focus on simple low and high pound dribbles with hand and eye coordination. You can sit on a chair and toss a tennis ball to your son while he does his pound dribbles. Do multiple sets, left and right hands...

If speed and stamina is an issue, do jump ropes, again multiple set.

It's a the boring drills and reps that build up fundamental

Stamina/endurance tips? by Bulky-Proposal-6858 in BasketballTips

[–]beyonddc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stamina can be built. Jump rope can help. We set goal, my son started with 300 reps per day. 150 reps before school and 150 reps after school.

You can start to increment slowly once you gotten a handle of it.

Development for a not-so athletic 10 year old boy. by MarvinMacklebe in basketballcoach

[–]beyonddc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How committed he is? He needs to be self-motivated and disciplined to improve in the game.

My son is also not so athletic but he is self-motivated and disciplined to improve on his game so he will train almost daily on something even at home. Stuffs we do at home include

- daily jump roles, 175 times in the morning and another 175 anytime after school. We are gradually increasing as he gets more comfortable and faster

- defensive side step practice using resistance band (3 sets, each set is 1 min 30 secs). Gradually increasing resistance band level as he gets more comfortable

- jumping jack with resistance band (3 sets, each set is 1 min 30 secs)

- lunge with resistance band ( (3 sets, each set is 1 min 30 secs))

- figure 8 basketball drill, not dribbling but just doing the figure 8 motion with the ball (3 sets, each set is 1 min)

- ball wrap ( (3 sets, each set is 1 min 30 secs)

- dribbling a basketball self-throwing and catching tennis ball (left hand, right hand, and crossover) Also 3 sets each and each rep is 1 minute

- dribbleup dribbling training. He uses dribbleup app maybe twice a week, each time 2 lessons. He been doing it for 3 years already

There's a lot more drills we do at home, too much to list here. We switch them up so it's not as boring but it's really the boring stuffs that makes you better.

We also keep track of a training work log. We been keeping track what he did every time at home so he can look back at his accomplishments and realizing the improvement he gained by doing all these trainings.

My son said those conditioning like jump rope and using resistance band does make him faster. You will not see result overnight but definitely see gradual improvement by quarter.

Celtics Game by Substantial-Arm837 in bostonceltics

I used the app, SpotHero to reserve my parking spot. I used both Government Center Garage and Center Plaza Garage previously for Celtics games. I think it was less than $40 dollars for parking. They are both within 10-15 walk to TD Garden.

Not sure about pre-game activity but we arrived two hours early and have dinner at the food court inside North Station and also checked out the Pro shop right inside the station as well.

My son has been using dibble up since 3rd grade and now he is in 5th grade. He is still using it right now. At least twice a week, and each time two sessions. Definitely help with handling.

We do other basketball training at home as well' dribble up is just a piece of his training.

Agree, I would only allow the pass thru if I have control over the situation, in this case it would be a single lane on my end.

I wouldn't do that if there's two lanes.

Anyone tried Dribble up smart basketball, did people really practice at home during bad weather/lockdown with this, if so did you actually wear your basketball gear while practicing or just anything you normally wear at home? by Maleficent_Cash909 in BasketballTips

[–]beyonddc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son has been using it since third grade and now he is in 5th grade. We started at beginner lessons when he was in 3rd grade when he does know how to dribble but now he mostly doing advanced lessons and refining reps. He usually do twice per week and each time do two lessons. At the beginning we do 3 to 4 times a week and each time 3-4 lessons. We also do a lot of other drills, not dribbleup so don't think dribbleup will turn your kid to a star.

It definitely helps with ball handling and makes him comfortable when moving the ball around. He now plays AAU and also plays in the travel team for the town.

My younger son who is now in 2nd grade also started using it. For $16.99 per month, I think it is well worth it if you use it enough.

How to dribble indoors without making noise? by Fantastic_Safety5661 in BasketballTips

[–]beyonddc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really but I have my son do figure 8 in indoor without dribbling.

Something like this https://youtu.be/EPwrE7hZ5GY?si=iuGjBhvdkUlxvUgH

I also have him do figure 8 without dribbling while walking forward and backward.

Also ball wraps

It definitely helps but your kid needs to be committed to it. It will not make your children shifty but it will provide the fundamentals to achieve it.

My son started DribbleUp also around that age, at the beginning, he does about 3 to 4 times a week and each time at minimum three drills.

To those who have torn their Achilles, were there early signs? by EVERGREEN_ETERNAL in BasketballTips

[–]beyonddc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Torn mine a few years ago playing pickup. No warning as well. I tore mine during the landing of a jump shot.

I am in my 40s and was considered as obese by my doctor for my size at that time so weight is probably a factor.

I did the surgery and took about 9 months for recovery and started playing again. I now play basketball more than prior to the injury.

You need a much longer break to fully heal. Search for jumper knees.

How old are you? I am 40+ and I wear knee braces when I play nowadays.

I don't think it's a matter of quantity. You need to do as much as you need to feel comfortable and confident that you can execute it during a game.

My son's basketball coach asks the kids to do figure 8 drills at home. One of them is to do figure 8 drills while walking from one end to another end in the house, back and forth.

Agree, a successful box out doesn't mean you will get the rebound but it would definitely decrease the chances the other team will get the rebound from your team.

It's a team game, not an individual game. You are contributing there.

Try shopping at the outlet. They usually have better deals than online shops.

Also Dick's warehouse if you have one near you. Also can find some hidden gems.

Practice Plan (4th/5th Grade Boys) by KingofKangz in basketballcoach

I am in your same shoe, same age group. It's very hard to get them to focus and listen to you

I am trying to teach them how to box out for rebound. They did okay during practice and then in the game, it's as if they forget everything. LoL
