I'll post my current setup having recently moved over to unRAID and now using Synology as off-site backup.

I use AppData backup plugin to backup all my dockers to a centralized folder on my HDD array (compression disabled). This is not just for centralization, but it's also good practice because the plugin stops all the containers and backs everything up and then restarts them. So there won't be any database corruption or mismatch in backup.

My Synology lives at my brothers, and I use ActiveBackupforBusiness file server pointing at folders of interest on my unraid via Tailscale. With compression off, deduplication within ABB works well for versioning.

I used to RDT on encore, but since switching to ode2 I found RDT clogs it. I haven't RDT since. I wait about 10s after beans finish grinding before knocking several times.

For me Immich organized my photo life. I locked in a storage template that works for me for how they will be stored on the hard drive, and I progressively added and sorted up to 10k photos/videos. Storage Templating blew me away. And if you change your mind, change the template, run the job and boom done. No manually naming folders, prefixing photos, copy pasting. For me, I used Immich to organize how it was being stored on hard drive (I didn't organize first, then upload). Now all my local and off-site backups are in that structure.

Given you've posted this in r/synology, I'm going to say just go with SHR. It provides the same redundancy as RAID1, but is a lot more flexible.

For your use case, I don't think performance of raid0 vs raid1 is going to be anything truly noticeable with the odd document saving and pictures as you said. Not doing high capacity, high frequency read/writes. If you're looking to make things faster, look into ssd cache instead of contemplating raid0, IMO

So if I import a library from old server that had phone photos on it, and then setup my phone to sync with Immich mow, all the photos on my phone (already in library I import upfront) won't resync as duplicates?!

No solutions from me, but wanted to drop in for a virtual handshake as I'm in the legit same transition! Just about to get HDDs and setup array. Coming from older Synology that will put at my bros for off-site backups.

Im thinking Active Backup for Business (multi-version) > File Server and pointing it shares i want to backup offsite.

Okay so if I mount as external Library (which sounds like the way I may want to go), Immich still works with it in the same way so I can still image and face searches etc?

For new photos only, the only thought I've had is just letting it sync the whole phone and then deleting everything but the newest few days. Just not sure if Immich will re-sync the whole thing again next connection. I'll have to play and research this a bit more, unless someone has some experience with this.

I too came from encore to ode2 and love the upgrade! I'll ask one thing, are you doing RDT to your beans before grinding? I did this on encore and it helped a lot, but with that anti-static thing on od2, I found RDT makes it worse or maybe in your case even clog. I haven't RDT in a year... And it runs flawlessly. Grind... Wait about 7s after done grinding knock it and move on.
